5 Best UK Theme Parks for Teenagers (Ranked for Thrill Rides)

Here are my 5 top picks for the best theme parks for teenagers in the UK. If you’ve got teenagers who are too old for gentle family rides, but still want a fun day out, choosing the right theme park can make all the difference. While many UK theme parks cater primarily for younger children, some are packed with big rollercoasters, thrill rides and adrenaline-fuelled attractions that older kids and teenagers will absolutely love. We’ve visited quite a few of the UK’s biggest theme parks over the years and, if your children are aged 12 and above, these are the parks I’d recommend putting at the top of your list…

1. Thorpe Park, Surrey

👉 Best overall theme park for teenagers

If your teenager loves big rides, Thorpe Park is hard to beat. Unlike some family-focused parks, Thorpe Park is designed around thrills, making it one of the best choices for older children and teenagers. (It’s my kids’ favourite theme park!) The park is home to some of the UK’s biggest rollercoasters, including Hyperia, Stealth, The Swarm, SAW – The Ride and Nemesis Inferno. There are very few rides aimed at younger children, which means the whole park feels geared towards teens and young adults. Bring spare clothes for the big water ride – you will get drenched! 😂 Check out my Thorpe Park Guide for more info.

What teenagers will love:

  • Hyperia, the UK’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster
  • Stealth’s incredible launch acceleration
  • The Swarm’s winged coaster experience
  • SAW – The Ride’s terrifying vertical drop
  • The more grown-up atmosphere compared to family parks
  • If your teenager is only interested in thrill rides, Thorpe Park would be my number one recommendation.

Money-saving tip: Consider a Thorpe Park Short Break Package. The Shark Cabin accommodation and ticket deals may be cheaper than booking a separate hotel – plus it comes with two day theme park entry, free parking, free breakfast and extra perks.

2. Alton Towers, Staffordshire

👉 Best for rollercoaster variety

Alton Towers has arguably the strongest collection of major rides in the UK. The park is home to legendary attractions including Nemesis Reborn, The Smiler, Wicker Man, Oblivion, Rita and Galactica. What makes Alton Towers special is the variety. Every coaster feels completely different, so teenagers can spend a full day riding without feeling like they’re repeating the same experience. If you’ve got children of mixed ages, the tamer rides and Cbeebies Land mean there is something for everyone. Check out my Alton Towers Guide or my Hotel Review for all the details.

What teenagers will love:

  • The Smiler’s world-record inversions
  • Nemesis Reborn’s intense twists and turns
  • Wicker Man’s unique wooden coaster experience
  • Plenty of rides to fill an entire day
  • If your teenager loves rollercoasters and doesn’t mind a lot of walking, Alton Towers is an excellent choice.

Money-saving tip: Book online in advance and avoid weekends during school holidays where possible. Keep your eyes peeled on the Alton Towers website for deals (like two theme parks for the price of one!) too!

3. Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Lancashire

👉 Best traditional thrill park

Blackpool Pleasure Beach doesn’t always get as much attention as Thorpe Park or Alton Towers, but it still offers some fantastic rides for older children and teenagers. The park combines classic coasters with more modern attractions, giving it a very different feel from the Merlin parks. Popular rides include: ICON, The Big One, Revolution, Infusion and Grand National. Because the park is relatively compact, you’ll spend less time walking and more time riding. This is another site with rides for younger kids as well – perfect if you’re trying to occupy the whole family.

What teenagers will love:

  • Lots of rollercoasters in a smaller space
  • A traditional seaside atmosphere
  • Some genuinely intense rides
  • Easy to combine with a Blackpool weekend break.

Money-saving tip: Check ticket prices on the Love to Visit Website – they frequently offer up to 30% off for Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

4. Drayton Manor, Staffordshire

👉 Best for younger teenagers

If your child is around 12 to 14 years old, and just starting to enjoy bigger rides, Drayton Manor is a great stepping stone. It doesn’t have quite the same coaster collection as Thorpe Park or Alton Towers, but it offers enough thrills without feeling overwhelming. Highlights include: Shockwave, Gold Rush, Accelerator and Maelstrom. Queue times are often shorter too, which can make for a more enjoyable day, and there are plenty of tamer rides too so you can occupy the whole family.

What teenagers will love:

  • Thrill rides without huge crowds
  • Easier to navigate than larger parks
  • A good mix of rides and attractions

Money-saving tip: This is another one with frequent discounts on the Love to Visit Website – they are currently offering up to 25% off Drayton Manor tickets.

5. Paultons Park, Hampshire

5 Best UK Theme Parks for Teenagers, frugal mum guide, photo of paultons park

👉 Best for younger teenagers and families with mixed age children

Paultons Park is often overlooked when people think about theme parks for teenagers, largely because it’s home to Peppa Pig World. However, there’s much more to the park than many people realise. In recent years, Paultons has invested heavily in larger rides, making it a fantastic option for younger teenagers who are starting to enjoy rollercoasters and thrill rides. It offers an excellent mix of family coasters, themed attractions and shorter queue times. Popular rides include: Storm Chaser, Velociraptor, Cobra, Flight of the Pterosaur and Drakon. This is another park well-suited to families with mixed age children. My Paultons Park Guide has more info – this one works well combined with a New Forest getaway.

What teenagers will love:

  • Rollercoasters suitable for older children and teens (but not on the scale of the big coasters at Thorpe Park and Alton Towers)
  • Fantastic themed areas including Tornado Springs and Lost Kingdom
  • Generally shorter queue times than the UK’s biggest parks
  • A park that’s easy to get around – there’s a lot less walking

Money-saving tip: Paultons Park rarely do offers but the immaculate park and shorter queues do mean you can really get your money’s worth. Pack up a picnic to keep costs down.

Other Theme Parks Worth Considering for Teenagers

While the parks above would be my top recommendations for thrill-seeking teenagers, there are a few other UK theme parks that are worth considering depending on your location and what your family enjoys.

  • Flamingo Land, North Yorkshire: This one combines a theme park, zoo and holiday resort all in one destination. The park has several large rollercoasters, including Sik, Kumali and Velocity, making it a surprisingly good choice for thrill-seeking teenagers. The animal exhibits also provide something different between rides. If you’re already planning a break in Yorkshire, it’s well worth considering.
  • Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey: Although it doesn’t offer the same level of adrenaline-fuelled rides as Thorpe Park, it does have several popular attractions that teenagers will enjoy. With themed lands and animal experiences too, it offers a more varied day out than many traditional theme parks, which can be particularly appealing if not everyone in the family is interested in rollercoasters. Check out my Chessington Guide for all the details.

  • Adventure Island, Essex: Located on Southend seafront, it offers a great selection of rides in a compact space. It doesn’t have the huge headline attractions you’ll find at Thorpe Park or Alton Towers, but teenagers can still enjoy plenty of rollercoasters and thrill rides. Its seaside location also makes it easy to combine with a day at the beach.

Which UK Theme Park Is Best for Teenagers?

If I was ranking them purely for thrill rides and older children, my order would be:

  1. Thorpe Park
  2. Alton Towers
  3. Blackpool Pleasure Beach
  4. Drayton Manor or Paultons Park (great for younger teens)

Thorpe Park is probably the best all-round choice for teenagers who love rollercoasters and adrenaline rides. The water rides there are fabulous too (perfect for a warm day!) and it’s so easy to reach as it’s just outside of London. However, if your teenager enjoys a wider variety of attractions, Alton Towers is a fabulous option too. (It’s also near the Peak District if you fancy a UK staycation!) Ultimately, whichever park you choose, booking in advance, bringing your own drinks and snacks, and visiting outside peak dates can help keep the cost down while still giving teenagers a fantastic day out.

If your thrill-seeking teenagers love the Merlin Attractions, and you’ll visit often, consider a Merlin Annual Pass – you can access absolutely loads of attractions (including Thorpe Park and Alton Towers) as many times as you like.
