Where is Amsterdam located?

Located in the Netherlands, in North Holland, getting to Amsterdam from the UK is actually really simple. It’s the perfect easy road trip destination – take the ferry from Dover to Calais (or the Eurotunnel from Folkestone to Calais – though it’s a bit pricier) and it’s around a 4 hour drive from Calais. If you live further up the country, you can take a ferry from Harwich directly to the Hook of Holland port in the Netherlands. The Netherlands is easy to explore thanks to excellent public transport and its compact size – you can drive across the country in just a few hours! Or, if you’d prefer to fly, Amsterdam has a busy airport with affordable flights from the budget-friendly airlines – the flight duration from London is just over an hour.

Things to do in Amsterdam with kids:

Amsterdam is a brilliant city to explore with kids, with plenty to keep all ages entertained. You can take a relaxed canal cruise to see the city from the water, hire bikes and cycle through leafy parks, or let little ones burn off energy in spots like Vondelpark. Family-friendly museums are a big highlight too, including the hands-on science exhibits at NEMO Science Museum. Older children may also find a visit to the Anne Frank House particularly interesting. With canal-side cafes and easy public transport, it’s a really manageable city break with kids. For more info, check out my 1 Day in Amsterdam Family Itinerary.

What’s the weather like in Amsterdam – when’s the best time to visit?

The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate, which means mild summers and cool winters, but it’s a fabulous family holiday destination for all seasons. The holiday parks tend to be set up with indoor swimming pools, as well as outdoor attractions, so the weather is definitely less of an issue. Though there are obvious perks to visiting in the warmer summer months, it’s definitely a place that can be visited outside of peak season too. For city adventures in Amsterdam, cooler weather might be preferrable so the shoulder seasons either side of the summer can be great for that. Plus, the winter offers a chance to see the Christmas markets, and the infamous tulips will be blooming in the spring time.
