Looking for a fun family holiday to the South of France on a budget? This Eurocamp Holiday Review is all about Les Lacs du Verdon (in Regusse, Provence, South of France). I’ve included our experiences, photos, details about the Eurocamp accommodation, what there is to do locally, the closest airport, Calais driving time and everything else that you need to know!

Holiday: September 2022 (Updated January 2024)

Les Lacs du Verdon Campsite

In September 2022, we embarked on another road trip – this time we began in Paris, then travelled down to the South of France for 12 days (splitting our time between Camping La Chapelle and Les Lacs du Verdon Campsite) before finishing our holiday with a week in Switzerland at Manor Farm Campsite.

To make the trip affordable, we used Eurocamp sites as cheap bases to hop between. We like to move around, so Les Lacs du Verdon in Regusse was our second stop once we were down in the South of France.

What was Les Lacs du Verdon Campsite like?

The Les Lacs du Verdon campsite was very rural, and a complete contrast from our first stop at coastal resort Camping La Chapelle. Whilst the site itself was full of life, with a lot going on the area to entertain everyone, the area surrounding the campsite was very peaceful, beautiful countryside.

We spent 6 nights at Les Lacs du Verdon, which was in driving distance to Gorges du Verdon and this beautiful lake.

What was the swimming pool like?

The swimming pools were absolutely fantastic – a real highlight of the trip for the kids! Les Lacs du Verdon has a main swimming pool, a covered pool with a current area, a toddler pool and lots of waterslides. Finn and Lola absolutely adored the flumes as they were ‘grown up’ ones and on par with any good waterpark. They were happy to be at the pool for hours at a time.

Because the setting is so rural, the facilities on the campsite were a real plus. Even though we travelled in September, there were quite a few people around and the energetic friendly staff ran water aerobics and other activities.

The pool area was clean, and well supervised by the lifeguards. The children were also allowed to use their inflatable rings in the pool, so they were delighted about that! In France, males are required to wear speedos rather than loose swimming shorts – so make sure you grab some for the suitcase before you go.

Local Area:

What is there to do near Les Lacs du Verdon?

As I mentioned before, Les Lacs du Verdon is a very rural campsite. We were sold on it after seeing the photos of the beautiful Gorges du Verdon, as we enjoy kayaking. But, in reality, we had an interesting time finding it! 😂

Following the signs, we ended up at the top of a mountain from which the gorges could be viewed. It was clearly a very popular viewing spot, as it was pretty busy, but since we actually wanted to be on the water we began the hairy decent. It took a while – Lola had fallen asleep by the time we got back down the mountain! 😂

Eventually we realised our mistake and found the lake that led to the gorges. Unfortunately, there was an issue with the water height entering the narrower gorge area so there was no kayak access from here, and we had to stay on the lake.

Having said that, we turned the day around and hired a little boat instead – really enjoying our afternoon anyway. It was very slow so the kids had a little drive which they thought was brilliant! Despite it being overcast, it was boiling that day so Finn and Lola hopped in for a swim too, to cool down!

With this campsite being so rural, you definitely couldn’t manage here without a car. (It would be handy to have bikes too for exploring the countryside.) We did our shopping at a local supermarket which kept costs down, but it was dearer than the bargain shops like Lidl and Aldi that we usually hunt for! The shop on the campsite didn’t have much in it, perhaps as we were at the end of the season, so a supermarket stock up was a must.

Was the accommodation good?

We booked with Eurocamp but they, along with lots of other providers, simply place their own accommodation on the sites which are run independently. At Les Lacs du Verdon, we booked an Azure Vista mobile home (known as Comfort Plus / Premium from 2024), as we’ve noticed that the Azure range tend to be newer, and we weren’t disappointed as this one seemed brand new!

The Vista mobile homes are slightly smaller than the standard Azures, but it made very little difference and the space still worked well for us. Everything was clean and we enjoyed using the BBQ to cook dinner, and eating on the decking outside. It was a lovely little mobile home to have as our base for the week.

We were placed in an area across the road from the main campsite. Aside from some road noise, which quietened overnight anyway, we enjoyed the peace and quiet. The entertainment did go on fairly late here but the noise was very distant from where we were. After a week of late nights at Camping La Chapelle, we were relieved to get some decent sleep!

What facilities are on site at Les Lacs du Verdon Campsite?

There was quite a lot of entertainment going on at this site, in the evenings and during the day.  The kids wanted to go to the evening bits, but it was all in French so our lack of language skills weren’t very helpful! But the staff were all very welcoming, smiley and friendly – both from the campsite and Eurocamp itself.

There were also books, board games and equipment for ping pong etc that could be borrowed from the Eurocamp reception. This was handy as the area was so rural that we didn’t head out much and it kept us busy – especially on the day it rained and we were stuck in the mobile home for most of the day.

The restaurant was closed for the end of the season, but there was a junk food bar that served pizzas and burgers etc. We always self-cater to keep costs down, but we did use it once to treat the kids, and it was reasonably priced and good quality.

The campsite had a small shop but, as I mentioned before, there wasn’t much in it. They did, however, serve fresh baguettes cheaply every day.

We were able to park directly next to the mobile home we stayed in, making it easy to load and unload the car of luggage and food shopping. There was also a good play park next to the pool area.

Eurocamp mobile homes are not equipped with TVs, unless you hire from their top range, so it’s handy to take a tablet or laptop with you with some movies for when you want a quiet evening.

All of the Eurocamp reps we met on our trip were friendly, helpful and spoke (or were) English.

How much does a Eurocamp holiday at Les Lacs du Verdon campsite cost – was it good value for money?

We paid around £300 for 6 nights at Camping Les Lacs du Verdon in an Azure Vista mobile home (known as Comfort Plus / Premium from 2024) – good value at £50 per night. The campsite itself was brilliant; the swimming pools were great fun, and it was well-run and clean. We also enjoyed our day on the beautiful lake, and our mobile home was immaculate!

However, for us this campsite was just too rural. I think it would have been better had we brought our bikes for exploring the countryside, but it was still very far out. We like to have a good balance of pool days and exploring, but the location meant there wasn’t much to do locally without a long drive.

Having already had a week chilling at our last campsite, we found ourselves eager to get to Switzerland by the end of the week, for a bit of adventure! But, if you like a campsite with lots to do and are happy to stay on site, relax and enjoy the facilities then it could be a good option – it’s a good campsite for kids.

This campsite is around an 10.5 hour drive from Calais (if you’re using the Channel Tunnel). The nearest airport, Toulon, is 100km away so realistically this Eurocamp site would only really be doable if you were arriving by car or flying and then hiring a car. As we home educate the kids, we are fortunate to be able travel term-time which is a great money saver, but if you’re restricted to school holiday dates then look for May half-term getaways – they’re always so much cheaper than the summer holidays!

But, having said that, affordable school summer holiday travel is possible – I went hunting on the Eurocamp website and found 35 family holidays under £1k! (There were more but I ran out of steam! 😂) So if you do need school holiday dates – this article is a great place to start: Budget Family Summer Getaways: July & August school holiday deals under £1000!
