Holiday: September 2025 (Gifted)

Playa Montroig Camping Resort Review

In September 2025, we embarked on a road trip to Spain using Eurocamp campsites to hop between as usual. We jumped on the ferry from Dover to Calais and had a hotel stay halfway before finishing the drive to the South of France for our stay at La Sirène. After 4 nights there, we carried on across the border into Spain splitting 10 days between Vilanova Park and Playa Montroig Camping Resort. (We loved all three resorts, so check out my other reviews too!) Finally, we made the drive back to Calais spending a night in Limoges to break up the journey home. What a trip! So, here’s my review of our stay with Eurocamp at Playa Montroig in Spain – it’s a brilliant campsite that caters well to kids of all ages.

What was Playa Montroig like?

Playa Montroig is a fantastic holiday park and a great option if you’re on the hunt for a Eurocamp holiday in Spain that’s not far from the airport. The main entertainment, one of the restaurants, the bar, the souvenir shop, the games room and the large supermarket were grouped together, with the splash pool and playgrounds nearby too. A short walk from there was the main pool complex which is really pretty – you can even see the mountains from the waterslides! (More on that below.) It’s a large resort that’s well maintained and has a lot going on if you fancy dipping into the activities like kids’ clubs, fitness classes or sports.

The staff running the activities were really enthusiastic and friendly and, despite our visit being slightly out of season in September, the site was still bustling and there was plenty to do. The main stage had entertainment on offer every night and there were activities like bingo available in the bar nearby. The bookable activities could all be found on the App and the resort catered really well to kids and adults. Adults could take part in things like water aerobics or a latin dance class, whilst teens had things like sports tournaments (beach volley, football, table tennis etc), movie showings, craft and mini golf on offer.

The mini club at Playa Montroig offered things like games, discos, face painting, crafts, entertainers and movies for the little ones. But equally, if you prefer a quieter holiday, this site was perfect for chilling at the pool or the beach – which is what we did for most of our stay! Beside the beach was a paddle board hire unit – this was €16 per hour. The Eurocamp hut had plenty of bits to borrow too (free) – we pinched some small boards and the kids spent most of the holiday on those. The beach had brilliant waves so it kept them entertained for hours!

There’s a bar beside the beach which looked gorgeous at night and you can take a short walk along the sand to popular local restaurant ‘Friends’ for dinner with a view. The beach was busy during the day but in the evening we wandered along the shore pretty much uninterrupted and played some Uno. You can also hire bikes on the resort – they had tons of options for kids of different ages and adults – it was the cheapest I’ve seen on a campsite with prices starting from just €6. A whole day of hire was €12, and the daily price reduced if you opted for multiple days. On the other side of the road (you cross using an underpass) there were sports courts for things like basketball and tennis, and well as a large football field and a play area.

There’s a bus stop directly outside the resort on the main road, so if you’re travelling without a car you can still explore the local area. Playa Montroig is a great Eurocamp holiday option if you enjoy days out as it’s close to some of the most popular coastal towns in Northern Spain – I’ll give you some more info later in the review. It’s also not far from PortAventura World and Caribe Aquatic Park which are both brilliant places for some fun family days out and you can catch a train for city adventures too. We had a lovely relaxing stay at Playa Montroig so keep reading and I’ll tell you everything that you need to know.

What were the swimming pools like?

Eurocamp Holiday Review: Playa Montroig, Costa Dorada, Spain, frugal mum travel guide, photo of swimming pool

The swimming pools at Playa Montroig are split between two areas. The main swimming pool complex has a couple of gorgeous pools and waterslides for the kids (not huge but pretty speedy – my two still liked them!), a shallow pool for little ones and a bar/food area. The pool is surrounded by astro turf which eliminates the sun bed wars as you can just pop your towels down where you like. There were lifeguards dotted around and classes ran from the smaller pool with things like aqua aerobics which was really popular – the lady running it was brilliant.

Our Eurocamp accommodation was just a few minutes walk from the pool so it was handy for going to and fro when we wanted to head back to change or eat. I don’t think the pools were heated but they were a good temperature – I’m not a fan of cold pools and they were fine for me. The pool was open from 10am – 7pm. The large splash pool was really popular with the little ones. It’s a short walk away from the main pool area and had slides and play equipment for toddlers and younger children. If you’re travelling with kids under the age of about 6 they’d likely absolutely love it there! The play pool was open from 11am – 6pm.

Local Area: What is there to do near Playa Montroig?

Cambrils and Salou

Eurocamp Holiday Review: Playa Montroig, Costa Dorada, Spain, frugal mum travel guide, photo of cambrils

Cambrils is a great spot for a beach day around a 20 minute drive from Playa Montroig – there’s a lovely stretch of golden sand with a promenade running alongside it. There you’ll also find shops, loads of restaurants and market stalls too, it’s a really popular spot and we enjoyed having a wander, some lunch and (of course!) an ice-cream. Similarly, Salou is around the same distance away and also offers a sandy beach, shops and restaurants if you fancy doing some exploring.

PortAventura World

If you fancy some thrill-seeking, you’ll find PortAventura World just a 20 minute drive from Playa Montroig Camping Resort. PortAventura World is a massive theme park that’s perfect for kids of all ages – from Sesame Street-themed rides for little ones to adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters for older kids, it’s a guaranteed to be a hit with the whole family. Make sure you pack refillable water bottles and snacks to save on park prices, and use the Tiqets website to hunt out deals for your tickets and skip the entrance queues.

Barcelona

If you fancy some city sightseeing, Barcelona is around a 90 minute drive from Playa Montroig. Alternatively, you can catch the train from Cambrils – the journey is around an hour and it’s probably the most hassle-free way to reach the city. (The train tickets in Spain are also much cheaper than our UK trains!) If you’re thinking of visiting Barcelona check out my article: The 10 best things to do in Barcelona on a budget with kids.

Caribe Aquatic Park

If your kids are as addicted to waterslides as my two, then you’ll definitely want to add a family day out at Caribe Aquatic Park to your itinerary – it’s around a 20 minute drive from Playa Montroig. Use the Tiqets website to hunt out deals for your tickets, and if you also want to visit PortAventura World and Ferrari Land then make sure you check out their combination tickets – if you want to do all three it’s a great way to save money.

Tarragona

Eurocamp Holiday Review: Playa Montroig, Costa Dorada, Spain, frugal mum travel guide, photo of tarragona ampitheatre

Playa Montroig is just a 25 minute drive from Tarragona – we visited on an overcast day and it’s a great place for a wander. You can park in the big mall which was absolutely fantastic for passing the time on a showery day and when it cleared we wandered to the centre to make the most of the gluten free bakery! There’s also a Roman Amphitheatre if you’d like a little bit of history on your trip and it’s far more compact and easy to get around than Barcelona if you’re not up for a big city visit.

Was the accommodation good?

Eurocamp Holiday Review: Playa Montroig, Costa Dorada, Spain, frugal mum travel guide, photo of ultimate plus accommodation

For our Eurocamp holiday at Playa Montroig we stayed in an Ultimate Plus holiday home and it was the second time we’d booked accommodation from their poshest range. These holiday homes are a pricier option, so it’s not something we’d be able to book all the time, but we were gifted our accommodation for this trip and I upgraded after staying in an Ultimate Plus (and loving it!) back in June. I’ll definitely be looking to upgrade every now and then, if the price difference isn’t too much, for some of our future stays because this range is just so nice. The large decking was awesome, with a huge lounge seating area, an egg chair, a dining set and sun loungers too.

In the kitchen area we had a fridge freezer, an oven, a large dishwasher, a microwave, a toaster, a coffee machine and a kettle. There was also air-conditioning and a TV too. We don’t watch TV much on holiday but it’s nice to be able to relax in the evenings if you want a break from being busy, and it had satellite TV with English channels which was fantastic! As it was Eurocamp’s Ultimate Plus range we got towels and bed linen included, and the beds were pre-made too which makes life a bit easier when you arrive. The holiday home also had its own wifi box – which is something we’d not come across before – and this made it so easy to stream on our Roku or for the kids to play online when we needed some chill time.

This style of accommodation is definitely larger than other types, we had lots of space with a seating area and a dining table in the main living room, and more room to move around in the bedrooms. There was a toilet and a shower room by the kids’ rooms, and then we had an en-suite with a toilet, shower and sink off of our main bedroom. Our accommodation had three bedrooms – all of the rooms had blackout and bug blinds on them and the beds were really comfortable so we slept well. If you’re budget allows, this accommodation type really is brilliant and off-peak it’s not always too much more so well worth the upgrade – the price difference between Premium and Ultimate Plus was only around £20 per night for this trip.

What facilities are on site at Playa Montroig?

  • If you don’t want to leave to hunt out food then you can definitely get everything you need on-site. The supermarket at Playa Montroig was large and really well-stocked for meals and treats. (There was a butchers area inside for fresh meat as well.) You could also get restaurant food and reasonably priced take away food so, if you’re travelling without a car, you wouldn’t need to leave for food unless you wanted to. However, it’s only a 15 minute drive from Lidl and a huge Entrada supermarket (which was great for gluten free food) if you do have a car. We did a shop there when we first arrived and then just got bits and bobs as needed from the resort supermarket.

  • We were able to park directly in front of the holiday home that we stayed in, making it easy to load and unload the car of luggage and food shopping. Most Eurocamp accommodation doesn’t come with a TV – it’s only included with their higher ranges – so it’s handy to take a tablet or laptop with you with some movies for when you want a quiet evening if it’s not included with your holiday home type.
  • All of the staff that we met on our trip were helpful and spoke very good English. The site had a lovely family feel about it – there were lots of play areas dotted around, kids out on their bikes and families enjoying the beach. It’s a great family-friendly holiday park option if you’re looking for a base on the Costa Dorada.

Getting to Playa Montroig, Spain, from the UK

Playa Montroig is about an 14.5 hour drive from Calais so, if you’re hopping on the ferry and opting for a road trip, you’ll want a stopover on the way. This was our first time driving to Spain and it was surprisingly stress-free. For this trip, we did a hotel stay at Ace Hotel Chateauroux Déols which was around a 5.5 hour drive from Calais on the way down. It was a fantastic budget-friendly base for a night – we paid about £70 for a family room. On our way back we stayed in Limoges at Sure Hotel by Best Western – again this was a great base just off the motorway for a stop over mid-way back from Spain, around £90 for a family room. If you’re new to road trips, this article is a great place to start: How to road trip on a budget around Europe – the ultimate family guide! You can book your ferry / Eurotunnel travel directly through Eurocamp, or check out the Direct Ferries website to compare prices across routes and providers.

If you’re wanting to fly to Playa Montroig then the nearest airport is Reus Airport which is just a short 20 minute transfer away from the campsite. Use the Skyscanner website to find the cheapest flight prices – it’ll compare airlines, airports, dates and times for you without you having to do all of the leg work! And, check out the Sun Transfers website to see prices for airport transfers, or Expedia is a great place to start if you plan to hire a car.

How much does a Eurocamp holiday at Playa Montroig cost – was it good value for money?

Hopefully my review has been helpful – our 5 night stay at Playa Montroig, on the Costa Dorada in Spain, in a Eurocamp Ultimate Plus holiday home was worth around £800. Our stay was gifted, but if you’re looking at similar dates for next year (we went mid September) Premium holiday homes seem to be around £100 per night, and the Ultimate options are around £140-£160 per night. It’s a lovely base for a family beach holiday on the Costa Dorada coastline and we really couldn’t fault it. You can stay put if you feel like it or go exploring to enjoy beach days, theme parks and city sightseeing – it’s in a fantastic location for days out. The kids absolutely adored the beach and the palm-tree lined resort really does put you in holiday mode from the minute you arrive. As we home-educate the kids, we are fortunate to be able travel term-time which is a great money saver, but if you’re restricted to school holiday dates then look for May half-term getaways – they’re always so much cheaper than the summer holidays! But, having said that, affordable school summer holiday travel is possible – I went hunting on the Eurocamp website and found 50 family holidays under £1k for August 2026 – with prices starting from less than £300! (There were more but I ran out of steam! 😂) And, for even more fabulous holiday options in sunny Spain, check out my articles: The 12 best Eurocamp resorts in Spain for family holidays and Which Eurocamp resorts in Spain are near airports?
