5. Visit Bardolino and the Olive Oil Museum
The pretty lakeside town of Bardolino is a great family stop – enjoy a stroll along the promenade, where the kids can spot boats and splash in the shallow water. We adored walking along the path along Lake Garda in the evenings. (Just make sure you wear some bug bracelets to avoid getting attacked by the midges!) For something different, visit the Museo dell’Olio d’Oliva (Olive Oil Museum), a free attraction where kids can learn how olive oil is made and see old-fashioned tools and presses.
There are loads of family orientated, budget-friendly Eurocamp holiday parks in the Lake Garda area – it’s a fantastic spot for an Italian getaway. Here are my top 6 picks for the best places to stay in Lake Garda with kids:
- Cisano San Vito: Located between the lovely towns of Bardolino and Lazise, the resort is great for active families – with swimming pools and waterslides (Finn and Lola thought they were great!) and direct access to Lake Garda.
- Bella Italia: This popular resort boasts a beautiful private lakeside beach. The kids will love the splash zones and waterslides, while the shallow pools are perfect for little ones. For older children, there are sports facilities including football, table tennis and bike hire.
- hu Altomincio Village: Just a 10 minute drive from the lake, the park features a fantastic pool complex with waterslides and splash areas – perfect for all-day fun. Activities on offer include: mini-golf, bike hire, a tree-top adventure course and kids’ clubs.
- Del Garda Village and Camping: This park is just a 25 minute walk from Gardaland, and you can hop on a bus to visit Caneva Waterpark and Movieland Studios too. Highly rated on TripAdvisor, this family-friendly resort boasts four swimming pools and waterslides.
- Camping Village Butterfly: This smaller site is ideal for families with younger children. It has a lovely swimming pool, a playground, sports and organised family activities. Plus, it’s just a short walk to Lake Garda – with a small lakeside beach just 50m away.
- Camping Village Weekend: Surrounded by olive groves, and with fabulous views over Lake Garda, this well-rated site has a lot to offer family holidays with several swimming pools, kids’ clubs, sports, a playground, a games room, pony rides and soft play.
Most of these holiday parks are less than 30 minutes away from the nearest airport (Verona) so Lake Garda really suits a car free Eurocamp holiday if you want to avoid driving or hiring a car. When is the best time to visit Lake Garda?

The best time for families to visit Lake Garda is definitely over the summer months or shoulder seasons. We visited in September, and enjoyed lovely warm weather and less crowds than the summer months bring. We adored our stay in Lake Garda with the kids – there’s so much to do – so plan your trip between May and September and hopefully you can enjoy lots of swimming, sunshine and gelato! Just make sure you pack some swimming caps – as lots of holiday parks in Italy require these to be worn when you’re using the pools.
Is Lake Garda worth a visit?
Lake Garda is an ideal family holiday destination, with so much to see and do both at the lake and nearby, and there are plenty of budget-friendly activities to keep everyone happy. Pack picnics, explore on foot and take advantage of free attractions to make the most of your trip without overspending. Your kids will love the adventure, and you’ll create family memories that last a lifetime! It’s one of the best holiday spots in Italy. I hope my family holiday itinerary has been helpful – if you have any other suggestions for fun with the kids in Lake Garda please share them in the comments.
