Holiday: September 2024

Landal Warsberg Campsite Review

This September we embarked on another epic European road trip – hopping between 4 Eurocamp campsites as cheap bases. We took the ferry from Dover to Calais before driving to Germany for our first stay at Landal Warsberg, then moved onto Sportcamp Woferlgut in Austria, before spending a week in Italy at the incredible Union Lido Mare Resort. After that we began our drive back towards the UK, staying in Germany again at Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof in Bavaria. So here’s my full review, and everything that you need to know, about the first stop on our Eurocamp road trip at Landal Warsberg Campsite in Germany.

What was Landal Warsberg Campsite like?

Landal Warsberg was a lovely campsite, situated in Saarburg in the beautiful German countryside, next to the River Saar and the Mosel Valley, with lots to do locally and on-site. The campsite itself had several playgrounds for the children, as well as activities like a bouncy pillow, crazy golf, a play house and loads of sport areas. It was really geared up for families with lots to keep the kids entertained. There was also an indoor play area with digital games and a small soft-play, plus bikes and go-karts for hire (my two loved the go-karts!). It was a very family-friendly campsite and catered well to older kids as well as younger ones.

There was a restaurant on the campsite, as well as a snack bar area, an entertainment area lit with fairy lights (though we travelled out of season so there was no entertainment) and a lovely indoor swimming pool. The icing on the cake for my kids was the toboggan run – but more on that later! The site was clean, well run and a really great location to explore from. If you’re after an easy budget-friendly drive, it’s not too far from Calais and the route is toll free too through Belgium and Luxembourg.

What was the swimming pool like?

The indoor swimming pool at Landal Warsberg Campsite was great – it had a small slide for the kids and plenty of space for them to have a splash around. My two loved the lazy river area, and there was a pool area for younger children too. Having an indoor pool worked out perfectly for us as the weather was a bit hit and miss so it kept the kids entertained while we waited out the rain. This campsite also had a wellness area with steam rooms and jacuzzi baths for the adults – in case you need a little TLC – which was self-service at €3 each. The swimming facilities were of a high standard and extremely clean (with great showers too!) but I must mention, though there was someone supervising the pool, he was very distracted by his phone so don’t let children swim unattended.

Local Area: What is there to do near Landal Warsberg Campsite?

Landal Warsberg Campsite is in an excellent location – the Saarburg area is so pretty and peaceful but there’s also lots to do nearby without having to drive for miles which is always a bonus when travelling with kids. You can hire bikes to cycle in the surrounding area, and here are some of the attractions and places that you might want to check out on your family holiday in Saarburg.

The Toboggan Run

Eurocamp Holiday Review, Landal Warsberg Campsite, Saarburg, Germany, frugal mum photo toboggan run

There’s a brilliant toboggan run next door to the campsite, and my children’s long-standing obsession with toboggans was actually one of the reasons that we chose this holiday park! They absolutely loved it! It was only €3 per go so it’s a great pocket money option too – Finn and Lola enjoyed it so much they went on twice.

Saarburg Chairlift

Next to the toboggan run is a chairlift that takes you to and from the town of Saarburg, with beautiful views of the countryside and the Mosel Valley. We loved being able to leave the car behind and explore the local area on foot, the chairlift takes you down into the town area and the views were incredible. This was €23 for a family return trip and we thought it was really reasonable.

The town of Saarburg

We drove through Saarburg on our way to the campsite so we couldn’t wait to get back and explore it, it was such a quaint place. The main square, surrounding the river, is lined with restaurants and beautiful red flowers – it was gorgeous. And the waterfall areas are magical too. The River Saar is also perfect for a walk, a canoe tour, or boat rides too – the boat stops for a couple of hours, allowing time for exploring nearby Mettlach, before the return ride back.

The city of Trier

Eurocamp Holiday Review, Landal Warsberg Campsite, Saarburg, Germany, frugal mum photo trier

We absolutely loved our day in Trier – it’s Germany’s oldest city and it’s just stunning. It offers a mixture of Ancient Roman and traditional German architecture, and it’s another one of those cities that doesn’t feel like a city at all (my favourite kind!). It’s so easy to navigate the main sights on foot and a very budget friendly place to visit too. It’s only a 30 minute drive from the campsite to Trier, and parking in the city centre was just €2 per hour. If you’re heading to Saarburg, definitely have a day trip to Trier – check out my article for more info: Germany with Kids: What are the best things to do in Trier?

Luxembourg City

Eurocamp Holiday Review, Landal Warsberg Campsite, Saarburg, Germany, frugal mum photo luxembourg city

Saarburg is actually not far from Luxembourg either if you fancy a day trip to Luxembourg City too. (It’s one of our favourite places!) It has to be one of the most stunning cities in Europe, and parking and public transport is free so it’s super easy to visit without spending a penny! For all the details, check out my article: How to spend a day in Luxembourg City on a budget with kids. We drove through Luxembourg to get to Landal Warsberg so it would also be a great combo for a multi-stay holiday too – it’s a brilliant country to spend a few days in. We really loved our stay earlier this year at hu Birkelt Village campsite in Luxembourg – check out my review for more info.

Family attractions

If you fancy visiting some local family attractions in the Saarburg area there are actually quite a few to choose from for a fun day out with the kids, places like:

  • Saarbrücken Zoo – home to over 100 species of animals including all the kids’ favourites like giraffes, penguins and monkeys.
  • Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht – a dinosaur themed attraction park, perfect for any little dinosaur fans!
  • Eifelpark Theme Park – 60 attractions (including rollercoasters and water rides) and animals too, this sounds like a great day out with the kids.

I hope this has given you a little taster – you can find out more in my article: Germany with Kids: The best things to do in Saarburg.

Was the accommodation good?

We booked with Eurocamp but there was also lots of room for camping, and the resort themselves (Landal) have their own accommodation too, it’s a really big site. We booked a Comfort holiday home and were really pleased with it – it was extremely clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It had a spacious central living and kitchen area with seating and a dining table, 3 bedrooms, a shower room (with a fitted hairdryer) and a separate toilet. We also had an electric kettle, a microwave, a decent size fridge and a hob. (It didn’t have an oven unfortunately but we were well prepared with rice and pasta!) Our Eurocamp accommodation also had air-conditioning and lots of storage, plus black out blinds and bug screens for the windows.

The setting of the holiday home was brilliant. We were a two minute walk from all of the amenities and activities, and we had a full length decking – it was lovely to sit out on the deck for breakfast, or for dinner and a game of cards in the evenings. (Just a heads up too that you’ll need to pop the front door key into a slot inside for the electricity to work.) Full disclosure – we did have one issue during our stay – the kitchen tap broke and it wouldn’t turn off so they had to shut off the water overnight. It was a bit annoying but it was right before bedtime so it didn’t cause us much bother and they replaced the tap whilst we were out the next day – these things happen hey! (Though it did mean we used the camping facilities for showers/toilets that morning and they were extremely clean if you’re thinking of a tent option.)

For more info on the accommodation options, and to find out what to pack / what’s included, read my post: Eurocamp Holidays: Which accommodation should I choose? What’s included?

You can also book your accommodation directly through Landal themselves – there are 145 bungalows on the site. We’ve not used them ourselves, but they offer chalet type buildings and their website shows images like the one below. Visit the Landal Warsberg website to take a look at their accommodation options. Landal have campsites in all sorts of lovely places like Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Austria, Denmark, Belgium and the Czech Republic (as well as the UK) so we’ll definitely stay with them at some point too. Between Eurocamp and Landal you can pretty much explore most of mainland Europe on a budget!

What facilities are on site at Landal Warsberg Campsite?

  • There was an on-site shop for any shopping emergencies, but we did a full shop at Lidl which was just a 5 minute drive away (at the bottom of the hill) and priced similarly to our usual shopping back home. It was definitely handy having a main supermarket so close by. They had a great bakery area and fresh rolls were just 19p if you want some bits for cheap lunches and picnics.
  • We were able to park directly in front of the holiday home that we stayed in, making it easy to load and unload the car of luggage and food shopping. Most Eurocamp accommodation doesn’t come with a TV – it’s only included with their higher ranges – so it’s handy to take a tablet or laptop with you with some movies for when you want a quiet evening if it’s not included with your holiday home type.
  • The Eurocamp rep here was a really friendly English man, and the other staff on the site were also fluent in English and very cheerful and friendly. There was also free wifi available (and it worked!) so that was brilliant for saving our data allowance. We didn’t eat in the restaurant, and it was closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays (probably due to us visiting out of season), but there were plenty of restaurants in the town.
  • We also made use of the laundrette which charged €4 for the washing machines, and €3.50 for the tumble dryers.

Getting to Saarburg, Germany, from the UK

Eurocamp Holiday Review, Landal Warsberg Campsite, Saarburg, Germany, frugal mum photo trier

Honestly, driving to Germany is a really simple road trip, and if you avoid France it won’t cost you anything in tolls either. Landal Warsberg Campsite is around a 5 hour drive from Calais on a toll-free route through Belgium and Luxembourg. And, if you get the ferry, it should only cost you around £100 for a return (booked through Eurocamp) which is likely to be a lot cheaper than the cost of flights for the whole family. (Or check out the Direct Ferries website to compare prices across routes and providers.) If you’re opting for a road trip, check out my article: Family road trip essentials: 13 things to pack on a road trip with kids to make sure that you have everything you need for stress free travel. But, if you’d prefer to fly, the closest airport is Luxembourg Airport which is about 45 minutes away from Landal Warsberg Campsite. All public transport in Luxembourg is free, which would definitely make transfers from the airport cheap as it’s only just across the border into Germany. (And Luxembourg is a fantastic country so definitely do some exploring there too!) Use the Skyscanner website to find the cheapest flight prices – it’ll compare airlines, airports, dates and times for you without you having to do all of the leg work! And, check out the Sun Transfers website to see prices for airport transfers, or Expedia is a great place to start if you plan to hire a car.

How much does a Eurocamp holiday at Landal Warsberg Campsite cost – was it good value for money?

I hope that my review has been helpful – our 4 night stay at Landal Warsberg Campsite in Saarburg, Germany, in a Eurocamp Comfort holiday home was £204. We stayed at the beginning of September, so slightly out of season, and thought it was brilliant value for money at just £51 per night. The holiday home we had was a fantastic base and the campsite was brilliant for the kids – it’s very well located too in such a pretty part of Germany with lots of great days out nearby. If you still need convincing, check out my article: 10 reasons why you should visit Germany with kids. Germany is a great family-friendly holiday destination – particularly as it’s so close to the UK – and there’s lots of things to do in and around the Saarburg area with kids. As we home-educate the kids, we are fortunate to be able travel term-time which is a great money saver, but if you’re restricted to school holiday dates then look for May half-term getaways – they’re always so much cheaper than the summer holidays! But, having said that, affordable school summer holiday travel is possible – I went hunting on the Eurocamp website and found 50 family holidays under £1k for August 2026 – with prices starting from less than £300! (There were more but I ran out of steam! 😂)
