If you’re a fan of the iconic film The Devil Wears Prada, then the West End musical adaptation at the Dominion Theatre in London is a must-see – so here’s my review and also a bit of information on what age children it’s suitable for. We took our kids – Lola nearly 12 and Finn 13 – as we purchased the tickets for Lola’s Christmas present because she’s a big fan of the movie. This chic and stylish production was great fun and, though I have seen some people review it negatively, Lola and I both thought it was brilliant – so here’s everything that you need to know about The Devil Wears Prada Musical in London.

How long is The Devil Wears Prada Musical and what is it about?
The Devil Wears Prada London Musical runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an intermission. It follows the journey of Andy Sachs, a recent journalism graduate who lands a coveted position as the second assistant to Miranda Priestly, the formidable editor-in-chief of Runway Magazine. As Andy navigates the high-pressure world of fashion, she faces challenges that test her personal relationships and self-identity. We thought that the stage adaptation was really true to the plot of the movie, and the cast chosen to portray the characters were very convincing. I was curious to see the musical side of things, and how it would be blended with the storyline, but with the music written by Elton John it wasn’t surprising that we loved the songs too!

Where is The Devil Wears Prada Musical in London and how do I get there?
The Devil Wears Prada Musical is showing at the Dominion Theatre, located on Tottenham Court Road in London’s West End. The theatre is easily accessible via public transport. The nearest Underground station is Tottenham Court Road, served by the Central and Northern lines, just a short walk away. Numerous bus routes also service the area and, for those driving, there are several car parks nearby – though I’d highly recommend using public transport due to central London’s traffic and parking costs. If (like us) you’re travelling into London from other areas, take a train to Charing Cross Station – kids travel for £1 with Southeastern Railways. From there you can easily walk to the theatre in about 15 minutes, it was so quick and easy and we avoided needing to get squashed on the tube!

Who is in The Devil Wears Prada Musical?
Vanessa Williams, who you probably know from Ugly Betty, delivered a brilliant performance as Miranda Priestly – capturing the character’s icy demeanour. (Lola also loves Ugly Betty so she was excited to see Vanessa in the flesh!) Georgie Buckland, who played the lead Andy Sachs, was an excellent actress and singer. She actually really resembled Anne Hathaway who plays her part in the movie – she had an uncannily similar voice.
Amy Di Bartolomeo usually plays the role of Emily, but we saw the character portrayed by understudy Maddy Ambus. Honestly, she was one of the best cast members and she played the sharp-tongued first assistant Emily with impeccable comedic timing – I didn’t realise she wasn’t the usual actress in the role – she had Emily Blunt’s portrayal of the character down to a tee. And Matt Henry, who played the role of Nigel, had the most beautiful singing voice. Honestly, I thought that The Devil Wears Prada Musical was brilliantly cast – they all delivered such strong performances, and there were a lot of other singers and dancers supporting the main cast who all did a fabulous job too.

Is The Devil Wears Prada Musical in London suitable for kids?
The Devil Wears Prada London Musical is recommended for audiences aged 12 and above – and I think it’s worth adding a bit of information about the inappropriate scenes for younger kids to my review. While it maintains a tone similar to the original film, parents should be aware that the show contains some mild adult language and a few suggestive moments – for instance there are a few scenes were two characters go to bed together with kissing and some undressing. It’s clearly suggestive of sex but nothing explicit is shown. Because of these scenes, and the type of plot, The Devil Wears Prada Musical lends itself to a theatre visit with older children and teenagers.

Obviously it depends on your child’s maturity level, but I think that the age guidance of around 12 years old and up is probably spot on. For my kids – Finn wasn’t too impressed with the show, (though it’s easy to see why a fashion-based musical wouldn’t be a teenage boy’s cup of tea! 😂) but Lola loved it. So, if you’ve got a teenage (or pre-teen) daughter, a trip to see The Devil Wears Prada Musical makes for a fantastic girlie day out. I should also mention that there’s some strobe lighting and flashing lights – so that’s something to be aware of when taking children, or if you have a medical condition that might be affected by the lighting.
How much are tickets to The Devil Wears Prada Musical, and which seats are best?
We paid £32.50 per person for our tickets to The Devil Wears Prada Musical – this was for a 2.30pm showing midweek in January – £130 in total for our family of four. To save some money, I booked tickets with a slightly restricted view due to a safety rail. Though this might be an issue if you’re visiting the Dominion Theatre with younger children, for a show only suitable for kids around aged 12 up it shouldn’t be a problem. Lola had a slight restriction, so my husband remedied this by hunting out a booster seat (£1 charge), but for adults the safety bar shouldn’t be an issue. (I’m not very tall and I could see fine.)

The photo above shows the view from our seats – we were in Row H at the edge of the circle (seats 40-43) and I thought that the tickets were really good value for money. It saved us a fair bit booking the restricted seating area, but as you can see we had a brilliant view of the stage. The theatre isn’t huge, so I think you’d have a pretty good view from most seats to be honest. We always tend to opt for ‘restricted view’ seating to save money at the theatre and very rarely does it ever really impact our view. These seats were also right at the front of a walkway area so there wasn’t anyone in front of us blocking the view either. If you fancy sitting in the stalls, here’s the view from the seats there:

The Dominion is a lovely theatre – and the main areas had nods to the show with dresses and magazine-themed photo opportunities. There were toilets on all floors, as well as a bar area. You’ll have your bags checked by security staff at the door, so try not to come armed with too much shopping or luggage as that’ll slow things down. (Though there is a cloakroom if you want to check-in coats or bulky items.) Tickets can be shown on your phone but I would recommend printing or downloading them. This was one of the few times that I didn’t download them, and the internet signal was awful so I couldn’t get them to appear. Luckily the theatre has free wifi, so they left us come into the foyer to sort it – though the ticket desk also said they can find the bookings on their computers if necessary – so don’t panic too much but it would be easier to come prepared.
