Holiday: September 2024

Gitzenweiler Hof Campsite Review

This September we embarked on another epic European road trip – hopping between 4 Eurocamp campsites as cheap bases. We took the ferry from Dover to Calais before driving to Germany for our first stay at Landal Warsberg, then moved onto Sportcamp Woferlgut in Austria, before spending a week in Italy at the incredible Union Lido Mare Resort. After that we began our drive back towards the UK, staying in Germany again at Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof, so let me tell you all about our final stop – here’s my full review of this part of our Eurocamp adventure in Bavaria, Germany.

What was Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof like?

As I mentioned above Gitzenweiler Hof is in the most brilliant location – situated in Bavaria near the German border – making it the perfect base for hoping between Switzerland, Austria and Liechtenstein too. It’s close to places like Lake Constance (Bodensee) and Pfänder Mountain (which is actually in Austria) for days out and this area is just beautiful. The campsite itself is very nature based with woods, a fishing lake and farm animals – it was very different from some of the bigger resorts we’ve been too. We had fantastic weather whilst we were there so didn’t do as much exploring as we’d planned, choosing to relax at the campsite instead.

There are several play areas for the kids, and an outdoor swimming pool for the summer months – more on that below. Pony riding was also available for kids under ten at €14 for 30 minutes. There were two restaurants on the campsite too, and a small arcade games area. They don’t have a huge amount of holiday homes – it’s extremely popular for camping with lots of people bringing their own caravans and motorhomes. Due to the timing of our visit, there wasn’t any entertainment but there were stage areas for the summer months, and a kids’ craft room too – so it appeared that kids would be well catered for during peak times.

What was the swimming pool like?

The outdoor swimming pool at Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof looked lovely – I’ve also seen on some websites that they mention it being heated which is also a bonus if accurate. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to use it when we visited as it was closed for the season. It was actually a real shame as the weather was boiling hot, so that’s something to think about if you’re visiting out of season. (Our visit was near the end of September). It does say online that the pool is open from May – September, weather dependent, so if you’re visiting during the peak summer months it would be a great area for the kids to enjoy.

If, like us, you’re visiting when the pool is closed don’t panic – we found an excellent local outdoor pool if you’re lucky enough to get an out of season heat wave. From the campsite we were given tourist discount cards which can be used for free local public transport, and also for discounts for local attractions and sights. This meant that a family swim was just €9.50 – and the pool was on the lake so it had the most fantastic views. I’ve included more info on it below in the days out section.

Local Area: What is there to do near Gitzenweiler Hof Campsite?

Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof is in an excellent location so you can enjoy fun days out in Germany and the neighbouring countries. These are some of the places that you might want to visit, just make sure that if you’ll be using Swiss or Austrian motorways that you have the right Vignette for using their roads. (This isn’t needed for Liechtenstein.)

Lake Constance (Bodensee)

One bonus of a stay at Gitzenweiler Hof is that it’s only ten minutes from Lindau – a gorgeous old town on the side of Lake Constance (Bodensee). Not only is it a gorgeous area, with lots of restaurants if you fancy a meal with a view, but you can also get boat rides across the lake. The lake is bordered by Germany, Austria and Switzerland – it’s the third largest lake in Europe. If you want to travel quickly from Germany to Switzerland, you can use the ferry between Friedrichshafen and Romanshorn (which runs every hour throughout the year) to get from one country to another in just 45 minutes.

Freibad Aquamarin Wasserburg

Freibad Aquamarin Wasserburg swimming pool is directly on the lake and it’s such a gorgeous spot. With the ECHT discount card a family swim is just €9.50 (though I think even without it was only one euro more) so it’s a really budget friendly way to spend a warm afternoon. Parking was about €2 for four hours, if I remember rightly, and it’s just a 13 minute drive away from Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof. There was a waterslide for the kids, and you’ve got the option of the family pool or the length pool. You can also swim in the lake, and enjoy water sports from there too. There was plenty of grass for sunbathing or a picnic, a playground to the side and takeaway food available. We spent a brilliant afternoon – I would highly recommend a visit – check out my review for more details.

Pfänder Mountain Cable Car

One of our favourite days of the entire road trip was the day we went to Pfänder Mountain – which is in Austria though it’s only a 15 minute drive from Gitzenweiler Hof. Hop on a cable car to get to the top and you’re rewarded with the most beautiful views over Austria, Germany and Switzerland. (Though you can walk it too if you fancy it!) With the mountains and countryside on one side, and Lake Constance on the other, it’s such a beautiful spot – we could have happily sat there all day, it was so relaxing. There are animals and play areas for the kids too and, at €34 for a family ticket, we thought it was great value for money. Read my full review of Pfänder Mountain Cable Car for more info.

Other places to visit:

If you fancy visiting some local family attractions in the Bavaria area there are actually quite a few to choose from for a fun day out with the kids, places like:

  • Ravensburg Spieleland: Ravensburg Spieleland is a large theme park with loads rides and activities to keep the kids busy: roller coasters, gentle toboggan rides, alpine rafting and even a water park with speedy slides. It’s about a 30 minute drive away from Gitzenweiler Hof.
  • Walter Zoo: If you’re hopping over the border, Walter Zoo (the largest private zoo in Switzerland) has over 500 species if the kids fancy a day visiting the animals.
  • Affenberg Monkey Park: About a 50 minute drive away, more than 200 Barbary macaques live and roam freely at Affenberg Monkey Park which is another animal based adventure option for the kids.
  • Scheidegger Waterfalls: Just 15 minutes from the campsite you’ll find the gorgeous Scheidegger waterfalls with a petting zoo and a water playground for the little ones too. It’s very budget friendly too – entry is just a couple of euros.

I hope this has given you a little taster, for more info (and a few more ideas too) check out my article: Germany with Kids: The best things to do in Lindau, Bavaria.

Was the accommodation good?

We booked with Eurocamp but there was also lots of room for camping, and the resort themselves have their own accommodation too. We booked a Comfort XL holiday home and were really pleased with it – it seemed very new and the main living area had plenty of space which was great. Our Eurocamp accommodation had black out blinds and bug screens for the windows. Out of all of our stops on the trip, this place had the most gnats so the bug screens were absolutely fantastic – definitely make use of those.

It had a central living and kitchen area with separate seating and a dining table, 3 bedrooms, a large shower room and a separate toilet. We also had an electric kettle, a microwave, a decent size fridge and a hob. (It didn’t have an oven unfortunately but we were well prepared with rice and pasta and there was a BBQ outside too.) We had a full length decking – it was lovely to sit out on the deck for lunch and relax in the nice weather with a game of cards. The campsite was busy with caravans and motorhomes, despite it being out of season, but it was very quiet and peaceful and we slept so well.

What facilities are on site at Gitzenweiler Hof Campsite?

There was an on-site shop for any shopping emergencies, we did grab some milk, but it wasn’t suitable for a proper shop. We did a full shop at Lidl which was just a 5 minute drive away and priced similarly to our usual shopping back home. It was definitely handy having a main supermarket so close by. They had a great bakery area and fresh rolls were really cheap – perfect for picnic lunches – and a few times we grabbed sushi / sandwiches on our way out for an on-the-road DIY lunch.

We were able to park directly next to the holiday home that we stayed in, making it easy to load and unload the car of luggage and food shopping. Most Eurocamp accommodation doesn’t come with a TV – it’s only included with their higher ranges – so it’s handy to take a tablet or laptop with you with some movies for when you want a quiet evening if it’s not included with your holiday home type. The Eurocamp rep here was friendly, and the other staff on the site also spoke great English and were welcoming. We didn’t eat in the restaurant, but it did seem very popular with the other campers, and there were plenty of restaurants in the town of Lindau nearby.

Getting to Bavaria, Germany, from the UK

Eurocamp Holiday Review, Gitzenweiler Hof, Lindau, Bavaria, Germany, frugal mum photo horses

Germany is a great road trip destination – if you avoid France it won’t cost you anything in tolls – we drove through Belgium and Luxembourg on our way but we did head back through France on the way home as it’s a shorter route. (The tolls were about £50.) It took us around 9 hours to get back to Calais from Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof, but if you want to break the journey up, Landal Warsberg Campsite is good base along the way. If you get the ferry, it should only cost you around £100 for a return (booked through Eurocamp) which is likely to be a lot cheaper than the cost of flights for the whole family – so that can be a great money-saver compared to flights if you’re up for driving. Or, check out the Direct Ferries website to compare prices across routes and providers.

But, if you’d prefer to fly, you’ll be pleased to know that the closest airport to Gitzenweiler Hof is less than 30 minutes away from the campsite – so you can fly into Friedrichshafen Airport without a long transfer afterwards. How much does a Eurocamp holiday at Gitzenweiler Hof Campsite cost – was it good value for money?

Hopefully my review of Campingpark Gitzenweiler Hof in Bavaria, Germany, has been helpful – our 4 night stay (towards the end of September) in a Eurocamp Comfort XL holiday home was £284. We thought that this was good value for money at £71 per night – our accommodation was really nice, and it’s a very child-friendly place. This campsite is in a fantastic location for exploring Europe too, given its position near the borders of Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland.

We didn’t stay for long enough really, as there were lots of other adventures we could have had, but it’s a great location if you’ve got time to head into all of the neighbouring countries. (We were also quite tired by this point in our trip so we decided to slow things down and relax a bit!) But, we found Germany to be a great family-friendly holiday destination – if you still need convincing check out my article: 10 reasons why you should visit Germany with kids – we’ll definitely be exploring more of the country on future trips. As we home-educate the kids, we are fortunate to be able travel term-time which is a great money saver, but if you’re restricted to school holiday dates then look for May half-term getaways – they’re always so much cheaper than the summer holidays! But, having said that, affordable school summer holiday travel is possible – I went hunting on the Eurocamp website and found 50 family holidays under £1k for August 2026 – with prices starting from less than £300! (There were more but I ran out of steam! 😂)
