Travelling to Northern France from the UK by ferry
Fortunately, there lots of port options in Northern France so it’s a great holiday destination if you’re planning to travel by ferry and take a road trip. You can bring the car, avoid luggage limits and settle in onboard with food, seating areas and space for kids to move around, which takes a lot of the stress out of travelling with little ones. The Dover to Calais route will often be the cheapest option, as it’s discounted when booked through Eurocamp, and typically only costs around £100 for a return. However other routes may be more practical, particularly if you live in the West of the UK. For all other routes, the Direct Ferries website is the best place to compare deals, providers and crossing times. And, here’s a little bit about each port to help you to decide which option is best for your trip.
- St Malo from the UK by ferry: If you’re taking the ferry from the UK to St Malo from southern ports like Poole, the crossing usually takes around 6 hours. If you sail from Portsmouth, the journey is longer at around 10 to 11 hours but this is typically an overnight crossing, which many families actually prefer. Booking a cabin means the kids can sleep through most of the journey and you arrive in France refreshed and ready to start your holiday.

- Roscoff from the UK by ferry: The ferry crossing from the UK to Roscoff takes around 6-7 hours from Plymouth. You can book cabins for overnight sailings, enjoy proper meals onboard and let little ones stretch their legs rather than being stuck in car seats for hours. Arriving into Roscoff drops you straight into Northern Brittany, making it ideal for visiting these fabulous Eurocamp sites.
- Caen from the UK by ferry: Travelling from the UK to Caen by ferry is a really popular option for families heading to Normandy or Brittany. Sailings usually run from Portsmouth and are operated by Brittany Ferries, with both daytime and overnight crossings available. The journey takes around 6 hours and arriving at Caen, or more specifically Ouistreham, puts you straight onto the Normandy coast.
- Reaching Calais from the UK: Travelling from the UK to Calais is one of the quickest and most flexible ways to get to France, and it works really well for families whether you choose the ferry or Le Shuttle. The Dover to Calais ferry is typically more affordable than Le Shuttle but it takes around 90 minutes so it’s not quite as speedy. Le Shuttle, operated by Eurotunnel, is a bit pricier but it’s a good option if you want to cross the channel as quickly as possible. Leaving from Folkestone, you simply drive onto the train and stay in your car – arriving in France about 30 minutes later.
Flying to Northern France from the UK
There are also plenty of airports in Northern France so, if you’re coming from further afield or you prefer to fly, it’s definitely worth using Skyscanner to compare prices, providers and flight times. Here are some of the airports you might want to check out based on the location of your Eurocamp holiday park:
- For flights near Northern Brittany: Rennes
- For flights near Southern Brittany: Nantes, Lorient, Brest
- For flights near Picardy: Lille, Paris Beauvais
- For flights near Normandy: Rennes, Dinard, Caen
- For flights near the French Ardennes: Brussels South Charleroi
- For flights near Paris: Charles de Gaulle
Is Northern France worth a visit?
Northern France is absolutely worth a visit, especially for families looking for an easy, good-value break that still feels like a proper holiday. With short ferry crossings, minimal travel stress and familiar comforts mixed with that lovely French charm, it’s ideal if you’re travelling with kids.
