What should I know about catching the ferry from Dover to Calais?
To cross from the UK to France, on the Dover to Calais ferry route, takes around 90 minutes. Eurocamp offer reduced ferry travel (usually around £100 for a return) but if they’re out of slots check the Direct Ferries website as it’ll compare prices from the different providers. The Dover Ferry Terminal is located at: Eastern Docks, Dover, Kent, CT16 1JA. If you’re driving, pop the postcode into your Sat Nav and it’ll take you straight to the terminal. There are three main ferry operators running the Dover to Calais route: P&O Ferries, DFDS Seaways and Irish Ferries.

If you’re open to an alternative route from the UK to France, you might also want to consider the Dover to Dunkirk ferry which is operated exclusively by DFDS Seaways. The crossing time is around 2 hours, which is slightly longer than the Dover to Calais route, however Dunkirk is about 30 minutes further east than Calais so it could be a good option if you’re heading towards Belgium or the Netherlands anyway. If you live further up the country, you can also take a ferry from Harwich directly to the Hook of Holland port in the Netherlands if you’re picking one of the Netherlands Eurocamp sites for your stay. For everything you need to know about the Dover to Calais ferry, check out my article: Travelling from the UK to France – the ultimate Dover to Calais ferry guide.
Dover Ferry or Folkestone Eurotunnel (Le Shuttle)?
If you’re debating between the Dover ferry and the Eurotunnel from nearby Folkestone, there are a few key differences. The ferry is usually cheaper, provides onboard facilities and is suitable for both foot passengers and vehicles. However it takes longer overall, due to check-in, boarding and crossing times. On the other hand, The Eurotunnel is faster, with a crossing time of just 35 minutes from Folkestone to Calais. It’s ideal for those who want to get there quickly as you stay in your car for the entire journey, but it’s more expensive than the ferry and lacks onboard facilities. If you’re prioritising cost over speed, the ferry is the better value option. If you just want to get there as quickly as possible, the Eurotunnel is worth considering to shorten your journey time.

Holiday parks a little further away…
If you’re up for a slightly longer drive there are also some fabulous Eurocamp resorts in Brittany and Vendée. For these you’ll be looking at about a 6-7 hour drive from Calais but adding on a little extra time does give you more options and both regions are lovely to explore.
