Efteling vs Disneyland Paris: Which is Better for Families? If you’re considering a European theme park break, Efteling and Disneyland Paris are two of the best options within easy reach of the UK. Both work well for a short flight time or an easy road trip with the kids. We’ve visited both as a family, Disneyland Paris in 2023 when our children were 10 and 12, and Efteling in 2026 when they were 13 and 15.

Although there are obvious similarities, they actually offer quite different experiences. Disneyland Paris has the characters, castle, parades and shows you’d expect from Disney, while Efteling has its own fairytale world alongside a surprisingly good selection of roller coasters and thrill rides. If you’re not sure which theme park to visit, here’s a quick breakdown comparing the rides, queue times, theming, costs, location, accommodation and overall experience to help you decide whether Efteling or Disneyland Paris is better for your family.

 

What is Efteling like?

Efteling is the largest theme park in the Netherlands and is based around fairytales, folklore and fantasy. It’s sometimes described as the Dutch Disneyland, but having visited both I don’t think that’s particularly accurate. Efteling has a very distinctive style of its own. The park combines beautifully themed family attractions such as Symbolica and Droomvlucht with the Fairytale Forest and some genuinely good thrill rides for older kids and adults. Everything is contained within one large theme park, although it’s much bigger than we expected before visiting.

What is Disneyland Paris like?

Disneyland Paris is a much bigger overall resort with two theme parks, Disneyland Park and Disney Adventure World, alongside Disney Village and several themed hotels. Disneyland Park is where you’ll find Sleeping Beauty Castle, many of the classic Disney attractions and the main parade, while Disney Adventure World is home to areas based around Frozen, Marvel and Pixar. We visited in 2023, when the second park was still called Walt Disney Studios Park. It has changed considerably since then, with World of Frozen, Frozen Ever After, Adventure Way and a new nighttime spectacular among the additions that opened in 2026.

Efteling vs Disneyland Paris – which has the best rides?

This was one of the biggest differences for us. Both parks have some excellent attractions but I’d give Efteling the edge when it comes to rides for older kids and teens, whilst Disneyland Paris wins when it comes to younger kids.

Best Rides at Efteling

Efteling has a surprisingly strong selection of bigger rides. Baron 1898 is a dive coaster, Python has loops and a corkscrew, while Joris en de Draak is a racing wooden roller coaster. There’s also De Vliegende Hollander, which combines impressive theming with a water coaster. What I particularly liked was the balance. Between the bigger rides you’ve got attractions such as Symbolica, Droomvlucht and Fata Morgana, so there are plenty of completely different experiences to enjoy together as a family.

Visiting with teenagers, the bigger rides were a major reason our kids enjoyed Efteling so much. They went on all of their favourites multiple times and declared Baron 1898 as one of the best coasters they’ve ever been on (and we’ve visited lots of theme parks!) There are also plenty of tamer attractions, playgrounds and fairground style rides for younger children – the park caters well for families with children of all ages.

 

Best Rides at Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris has some excellent thrill rides for older kids too, including Big Thunder Mountain (Finn and Lola’s favourite ride), Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain, Crush’s Coaster and Avengers Assemble: Flight Force. There are also far more attractions based around familiar films and characters, which gives Disney a completely different appeal. Since our visit, Frozen Ever After has joined the line-up as part of the new World of Frozen which definitely adds to the experience.

Our children were 10 and 12 when we visited so they were just starting to seek out the bigger thrill-rides but still enjoyed the more family-style attractions too. They’re not massively into Disney, so I think that side of things was a little lost on them, but Lola still absolutely adored the parade. And, we all thought the drone show and firework display was incredible – I think it was actually my favourite part of the day and such a magical end to our visit.

Which park has better theming?

The two parks approach theming very differently, and both do it well, but overall I would say Disneyland Paris wins on this one. It gives you instantly recognisable worlds and characters, from walking down Main Street towards Sleeping Beauty Castle to Marvel, Pixar and now World of Frozen. If you or your children already love Disney, there’s something very special about seeing those places and characters brought to life.

Efteling feels more like stepping into an old European storybook. It’s incredibly green and atmospheric, with its own slightly unusual fairytale style rather than being based around films you already know. The theming is still done really well but personally I think Disneyland Paris takes the lead on this one.

 

Which has better characters, parades and shows?

For me, this is where Disneyland Paris wins easily. The parade and nighttime fireworks were actually my favourite parts of our visit and gave the day that big Disney spectacle that goes far beyond simply going on rides. There are also the character meets, princesses and shows, which can be a huge part of the experience, particularly with younger children who already love Disney. Disney Adventure World now has its own nighttime spectacular too. Efteling has its own characters and entertainment, including the Aquanura water show, but I wouldn’t choose Efteling specifically for these. If parades, characters and big shows are important to you, Disneyland Paris is the better option.

 

Efteling vs Disneyland – which has shorter queues?

Queue times can vary enormously depending on when you visit, so this may vary, but typically Efteling wins hands down when it comes to queues. We visited in the August school holidays and the wait times were 5-40 mins, with our average wait being about 30 minutes. This is unheard of at other big theme parks during peak season (except Paultons Park which is also great for queues!). Efteling also has free single-rider queues on several rides, which can be particularly useful with older children who are happy to ride separately.

We visited Disneyland on a week day in September and the wait times were all 45-60 minutes – with friends saying queues could be 2 hours long in the school holidays. This would severely limit how much you could physically get on in a day which might lead to an additional cost for a second day or pricey fast-track tickets (Disney Premier Access).

A plus for both parks, and I love this, if you’ve got younger children who can’t go on the bigger attractions, both Disneyland Paris and Efteling allow adults to take turns riding without queueing twice. But, if we are are basing this solely on queue times Efteling is the clear winner here – it’s well known for it’s short queues and they don’t even offer fast-passes so no queue jumping either!

 

Which park is bigger?

Disneyland Paris is the bigger resort, with two theme parks, Disney Village and numerous hotels. That gives you more to spread across several days, particularly now that Disney Adventure World has expanded. The new park looks to be well-worth a visit and a second day would be preferable if you were including both parks. We did 24,000 steps in one day when we visited Disneyland Paris – staying until closing for the fireworks – and we only explored the main park! Efteling has just one theme park, but it’s surprisingly large and spread out. There’s easily enough to fill a full day and we walked around 14,000 steps despite heading home at dinner time!

 

So, how many days do you need?

For Efteling, one or two days works well. You can see a lot in one day and with the shorter queue times the kids can easily have a few goes on their favourite rides. I think one day was enough for us, with teens mostly interested in the big thrill rides, but you might want to look at two days with slightly younger children. We didn’t have time to go on all the family rides and with the walk-through areas, fairground rides and play areas it would be a lot to cover in a day with little legs.

For Disneyland Paris, I’d allow two to three days, particularly if you want to properly experience both parks. There’s more to fit in once you include the rides, shows, parades and characters. Again, we only had one day (visiting only the main park) and this worked well for us with slightly older kids. But typically a couple of days is probably more realistic for Disneyland Paris – particularly if you’re visiting in peak season and waiting up for the fireworks. Plus, if you’re visiting with younger children, it would give you time for breaks, shorter days and a bit more flexibility to manage longer queue times, shows and character meet-and-greets.

 

Efteling vs Disneyland Paris Accommodation

Both can easily be turned into a short break or a week-long holiday rather than simply visiting for the day. Efteling has its own hotels and holiday villages, while Disneyland Paris has a larger selection of Disney Hotels alongside partner hotels and independent accommodation in the surrounding area. If you’re primarily interested in the theme parks rather than the hotel experience itself, I’d always compare staying nearby too. It can make a significant difference to the overall cost of the trip and holiday parks in particular can be a fabulous family and budget-friendly option.

 

Efteling Accommodation Options:

Efteling has several official accommodation options, including themed hotel rooms and self-catering holiday homes. Staying on-site is particularly convenient and it includes park admission for the duration of your stay – so it’s worth considering this when comparing costs.

Official options include:

• Efteling Grand Hotel – the newest and most luxurious option, located at the park entrance.
• Efteling Wonder Hotel – a family-friendly themed hotel within walking distance of the park.
• Efteling Bosrijk – woodland holiday homes and family rooms close to Efteling.
• Efteling Loonsche Land – simpler hotel rooms and holiday homes with a nature theme.

Holiday Parks Near Efteling:
There are also lots of fabulous holiday parks within easy reach of Efteling, which can offer more space and better value, particularly for families staying for several nights. Disneyland Paris Accommodation Options:

Disneyland Paris has a larger selection of official hotels, ranging from more affordable options to luxury accommodation. Staying at a Disney Hotel usually includes park tickets and Extra Magic Time, although it can be considerably more expensive than staying nearby.

Official options include:

• Disneyland Hotel – the most luxurious option, located directly above the entrance to Disneyland Park.
• Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel – a stylish Marvel-themed hotel within walking distance of the parks.
• Disney Newport Bay Club – a large nautical-themed hotel overlooking Lake Disney.
• Disney Sequoia Lodge – a cosy woodland-themed hotel inspired by America’s national parks.
• Disney Hotel Cheyenne – a more affordable Wild West hotel featuring Toy Story theming.
• Disney Hotel Santa Fe – a more budget-friendly hotel inspired by Disney and Pixar’s Cars.
• Disney Davy Crockett Ranch – self-catering woodland cabins located a short drive from the parks.

Holiday Parks Near Disneyland Paris:

There are also several family-friendly holiday parks near Disneyland Paris, often offering more space and better value than the official hotels. These are also popular for families looking for a longer stay – or a full week’s holiday alongside their theme park stay – with lots of child-friendly facilities on offer. Here are a few popular picks:

• Center Parcs: Villages Nature Paris: Best for a full family getaway with loads of kids’ activities and year-round stays just a 10 minute drive from Disneyland Paris.

• Eurocamp: Le Chêne Gris: A budget-friendly campsite around a 25 minute drive from Disneyland Paris.

• Eurocamp: La Croix du Vieux Pont: Best for a full family summer getaway with lots of kids’ activities, though it’s further away at around a 70 minute drive from Disneyland Paris.

Overall accommodation verdict

👉 Disneyland Paris wins when it comes to on-site hotels – with far more choice.

👉 Efteling wins for holiday parks – there are a couple of fab ones near Disneyland Paris but you’ve got loads of brilliant Landal, Eurocamp and Center Parcs options within an hour’s drive of Efteling.

 

Food: Efteling vs Disneyland Paris

Both parks have plenty of places to eat, ranging from quick snacks to sit-down restaurants. Disneyland Paris has the advantage if themed or character dining is something you specifically want to experience, whereas Efteling also has a good choice of places spread throughout the park. Personally, I think Efteling wins when it comes to food. Disneyland Paris say they allow snacks but not full picnics – whilst you can bring what you like at Efteling. Fast-food meals were cheaper too and Mr Whippy ice-creams were less than half the price they were at Disneyland Paris. We found it much easier to keep costs down at Efteling.

 

Which is easier to get to from the UK?

This one is a tie! Both Efteling and Disneyland Paris are relatively straightforward to reach from the UK, particularly if you’re happy to drive. Hop on the ferry or Le Shuttle from Dover / Folkestone to Calais and the drive time from there is around 3 hours for both theme parks. Obviously if you’re travelling by train Disneyland Paris is easier to reach on the Eurostar. For families looking to fly:

• Charles de Gaulle Airport is the closest airport to Disneyland Paris and you can take a direct high-speed TGV train, which takes around 10-15 minutes, or use a shuttle bus service which takes around an hour.
• Eindhoven Airport is the closest to Efteling – from there it’s about 40 minutes by car or make use of public transport and take a train and bus combo (Eindhoven > Tilburg > Efteling).

 

Which is better in bad weather?

Both parks have plenty of indoor attractions, but you’ll still spend a significant amount of the day outside. Efteling feels particularly outdoorsy because of its woodland setting, while Disneyland Paris also involves plenty of walking outside and potentially moving between its two parks. I wouldn’t choose one over the other purely because of the weather – for both the weather will likely be pretty similar to the UK and fairly unpredictable. It was 34°C when we visited Disneyland Paris (September 2023) and we had highs of 30°C at Efteling (August 2026) with the odd massive downpour. For either park, I’d pack lightweight waterproofs, sunglasses and sun cream to cover all weathers!

 

Do Efteling and Disneyland Paris both open in winter?

Yes, both parks operate throughout the winter, including the Christmas period. Efteling has its Winter Efteling season, while Disneyland Paris usually has seasonal decorations and entertainment around Christmas. Opening hours and individual attractions can vary, so it’s worth checking the current schedules before booking.

 

Efteling vs Disneyland Paris – Which costs more?

Cost could make a significant difference when choosing between the two. Rather than comparing a single day’s ticket price, I’d price the entire trip for your dates. Include travel from the UK, accommodation, park tickets, parking and food because that’s the figure that actually matters when you’re budgeting for a family holiday. Frugal Mum Tip: Don’t automatically assume you need to stay in an official theme park hotel. Compare the complete package with nearby hotels and holiday parks, particularly if you’re travelling by car.

Efteling and Disneyland Paris tickets were actually a similar amount for our particular dates but we visited Efteling at a peak time and Disneyland off-peak so Disney is typically the pricier option. It’s also significantly more if you want to visit both Disneyland Parks and you’re likely to want longer there – which will obviously also increase costs. With prices inside the park typically dearer too, if you’re on a tighter budget Efteling is likely to be more affordable overall than Disneyland Paris.

 

Efteling or Disneyland Paris: Which would we choose?

Having now visited both, I don’t think there’s one answer that works for every family. The age of your children and what they actually want from a theme park would probably be the biggest deciding factors for me. Looking back at our Disneyland Paris trip, I think we went slightly too late. Our children were 10 and 12 and, although we all had a good time, I think we’d have got more from the Disney magic if we’d visited when they were younger. Meeting characters, seeing princesses and recognising everything around them would probably have meant much more a few years earlier.

By the time we visited Efteling in 2026, the kids were 13 and 15 and their priorities had changed considerably. They wanted bigger rides and roller coasters, and so Efteling was definitely a better fit for them as two teens. That’s not to say Disneyland Paris isn’t good for teenagers or Efteling isn’t good for younger children – both cater extremely well for a wide range of ages. A Disney-obsessed teenager may still choose Disneyland Paris, while a younger child who loves rides and fairytales could have an amazing time at Efteling. For our family, though, I’d choose Disneyland Paris when they’re younger and Efteling as they get older.
