Welcome to my guide on the 10 best things to do in Devon with kids. Whether you’ve got toddlers in tow or teens in search of thrills, there’s something for every family in this gorgeous part of the country, and plenty of places to enjoy the beaches and countryside for freebie days out too. So pop these fantastic days out on your Devon family holiday itinerary – as these are the 10 best things to do with the kids if you’re looking for some fun days out:

1. Get soaked at an aqua park

For active families, the North Devon Wake Park is an absolute must. With an inflatable aqua park full of bouncy obstacles and a cable wakeboarding system for older kids and teens, it’s a brilliant way to burn off energy. For younger kids, there’s even a mini inflatable course so they can join in too. (Check out my North Devon Wake Park Review for more info.) Alternatively, if you’re holidaying in the South of Devon, Splashdown Quaywest Waterpark looks like brilliant fun for the whole family. It’s the UK’s biggest outdoor waterpark, with speedy slides, gentle rides for younger ones and a swimming area to cool off in on hot days. It’s right by the beach too, so you can easily make a full day of it.

2. Check out the wildlife at Paignton Zoo

If you’re looking for things to do in South Devon with the kids, Paignton Zoo offers a fantastic family day out. Spread across 80 acres, it houses over 2,000 animals including: lions, giraffes, monkeys and rhinos. It’s not just about looking though – the zoo puts a big emphasis on education and conservation, with plenty of signs, interactive displays and keeper talks to get children thinking about the natural world. There are also themed play areas dotted around, giving kids a chance to burn off energy between enclosures. Or, if the kids are into dinosaurs, Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in North Devon offers a blend of animals alongside a step back into the Jurassic Period!

3. Spend the day on one of Devon’s stunning beaches

Devon is blessed with some of the most beautiful and family-friendly beaches in the UK offering golden sands, rock pools and stunning coastal walks, so you can enjoy days out with the kids on the coast without spending a penny. For a classic bucket-and-spade day out, Woolacombe Beach in North Devon is hard to beat – it’s vast, clean and has gentle waves perfect for paddling or bodyboarding.

Blackpool Sands, near Dartmouth, offers a more secluded feel with crystal-clear water and a backdrop of tree-covered hills, while Bantham Beach near Kingsbridge is a favourite for families thanks to its wide sandy stretch and shallow waters. If your little ones enjoy a bit of nature spotting, Wembury Beach near Plymouth is great for rock pooling at low tide. Many of Devon’s beaches are lifeguarded in the summer and have nearby cafes or kiosks, making them perfect for stress-free seaside adventures with the kids.

4. Enjoy the animals at The Big Sheep Farm and Theme Park

A classic North Devon favourite, The Big Sheep Farm and Theme Park blends farmyard fun with family-friendly roller coasters and live shows – all wrapped up in a hilariously quirky package. From sheep racing and lamb feeding to soft play zones and outdoor rides, this place is tailor-made for younger children, and their indoor playground is a lifesaver on a rainy day. If you’re in North Devon, The Big Sheep is definitely one of the best places to visit with kids under 10 – there’s so much to do!

5. Ride the rails at Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway

Hop aboard the UK’s only fully water-powered funicular railway and experience the magic of the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway. This charming Victorian invention carries passengers up and down the steep cliff face between two picturesque villages. At just around £3 per ticket, it’s a budget-friendly treat that feels like stepping back in time. We rode to the top and then had a lovely walk around the village (and grabbed an ice-cream!) before walking the pathway back down the hill. Once you reach the bottom, enjoy some seaside fun on Lynmouth’s pebbly beach – perfect for a spot of paddling or a picnic with a view.

Another option, which will probably appeal more to families with younger children (because how many little ones don’t love a train ride?!) is to opt for the steam train instead. You can ride along the coastline on the The Lynton and Barnstaple Railway in a Victorian train carriage, so that offers another option for a fun family day out in North Devon. I think if we’d had the time we’d have done both!

6. Walk the Hartland Heritage Coast Walk to Speke’s Mill Waterfall

For families who love a bit of nature and don’t mind a walk, the Hartland Coast is simply breathtaking. Park at Hartland Quay and take a scenic coastal trail to Speke’s Mill Mouth Waterfall. It’s about a mile each way and manageable with older kids, especially with the promise of a dramatic waterfall and secluded beach at the end. Pack snacks, wear sturdy shoes, and take your time – the rugged views are worth every step. Or, for an alternative waterfall experience, head to the stunning Lydford Gorge – though you will need to pay an entry fee there if you don’t have a National Trust membership.

7. Let off steam at The Milky Way Adventure Park

Located in North Devon, The Milky Way Adventure Park is one of those rare theme parks that caters brilliantly to both sunny and rainy days – a true lifesaver in unpredictable British weather. It has a fantastic balance of outdoor rides like roller coasters, adventure golf, bouncy pillows and a mini-train ride, alongside indoor soft play zones (with a Ninja course and drop slides for the older ones), dodgems, target shooting and other activities. 8. Wander the National Parks

Dartmoor National Park offers miles of open space, perfect for family hikes, picnic, and wildlife spotting. Kids will love climbing the famous Tors, searching for wild ponies and exploring the beautiful scenery – there’s plenty of free fun to be had out exploring. If you’re in North Devon, Exmoor Park is a great spot for an outdoor adventure – picnic by a river, climb hills or enjoy a scenic drive through the rolling moorlands. The Valley of Rocks near Lynton is a family-friendly walk with wild goats and epic views, while Tarr Steps offers a lovely riverside route across ancient stepping stones. With two amazing National Parks, Devon is a fantastic place to find free things to do with the kids – perfect for balancing out those pricier theme park days whilst you’re on your family holiday.

9. Learn about animal care at The Donkey Sanctuary

A truly special (and totally free!) day out, The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmouth is a hit with families of all ages. Children can meet and greet dozens of friendly donkeys who have been rescued and now live in this peaceful haven. There are several easy walking trails around the site, many of them buggy-friendly, plus a well-equipped play area and a café with a stunning sea view. It’s both heartwarming and educational, as kids learn about animal care and the importance of kindness. Whether you’re stopping by for an hour or staying longer, it’s one of those places that stays with you long after your visit.

10. Enjoy an action-packed day at Woodlands Family Theme Park

Woodlands Family Theme Park, located near Dartmouth in Devon, is a fantastic all-weather attraction packed with fun for the whole family. It features the largest indoor play area in the South-West of the UK, perfect for rainy days, as well as exciting outdoor rides like water coasters and toboggan runs. Little ones will love the themed zones, gentle rides and the on-site zoo farm with everything from rabbits to birds of prey. With plenty of space to explore, regular seasonal events and even a campsite for overnight stays (which includes free park entry), Woodlands is a top-value day out that offers something for every age and interest.
