Here’s how to get £1 children’s train tickets on Southeastern Railways making the most of their ‘kids for a quid’ discount scheme – travel off-peak and you can save a fortune on travel for family days out all year round. We use it whenever we head to London with the kids and it’s a great way to keep costs down. Here’s everything that you need to know…
What are the terms for the ‘kids for a quid’ travel offer?
Up to four children between the ages of 5 and 15 can travel with each adult – children under 5 travel free anyway. This is offer is only valid for children travelling with a paying adult – unaccompanied children must pay the normal child fare, which is 50% of the adult fare. The ‘kids for a quid’ offer is valid for off-peak times only – but there aren’t any restrictions at weekends and public holidays – so just avoid peak commuter travel times on weekdays. This offer is also only valid on Southeastern services – so you’d need to do a split ticket if your route takes you onto other services too.
The £1 offer can only apply to journeys where Southeastern Railways are responsible for setting the fare. The ‘kids for a quid’ offer also isn’t valid on journeys wholly within the London Zones 1-9 area, and it can’t be used for first class train tickets either.
Which adult tickets can be used?
The adult ticket used must be valid for the journey being made and it works alongside Off-Peak, Super Off-Peak, Season Tickets and Advance fares. You can also still use railcard discounts to save even more on the adult tickets, however these discounts cannot be applied to the flat-rate £1 child fare. And, this offer can’t be used alongside any other special promotion tickets.

Where can you buy £1 children’s train tickets?
To get £1 children’s train tickets on Southeastern Railways – making the most of their ‘kids for a quid’ discount scheme – you can buy tickets both in advance or immediately before travel. They are available from the station ticket offices and ticket machines, or they can be pre-booked online on the Southeastern Railway website. Don’t forget that children under 11 travel for free around London too, using tubes or buses, so if you’re off to the capital you can save on travel when you get there as well.
