SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium Review: Is It Worth A Visit?

If you’re planning a family trip to Dorset and wondering whether SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium is worth visiting with kids, then the short answer is absolutely – especially on a warm and dry day – so let’s dive into my review. Of all the SEA LIFE centres we’ve visited, this one is actually our favourite – instead of being mainly indoors, it’s spread out across a large outdoor site beside the coast which makes it feel much more spacious and relaxed.

There’s loads for children to see and do, from penguins and seals, to splash zones and feeding talks, and because it’s outdoors it feels more like a full family attraction than just an aquarium. Here’s everything you need to know before visiting SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium with kids – this review will cover things like what to expect, how long you’ll need, whether it’s worth the money and practical information for your visit. What is SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium?

SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium is a large outdoor marine park and aquarium located on the Dorset coast. It’s home to penguins, seals, otters, sharks, rays, turtles, tropical fish and more! Unlike many other SEA LIFE centres, this one is spread across a 5 acre outdoor site with winding pathways between animal habitats, aquarium areas, play spaces and splash zones. It has much more of a relaxed holiday feel than the city-based attractions, especially in the sunshine. There are indoor aquarium sections too, but the outdoor layout is really what makes it stand out from the others.

Where is SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium?

SEA LIFE Weymouth is located beside Lodmoor Country Park, close to Weymouth beach and the seafront. It’s in a really good spot for families because there are lots of other attractions nearby, so you can turn your visit into a full day out. It’s easy to reach by car and there’s plenty of parking nearby, plus Weymouth train station is only a short drive away if you’re staying locally.

Where do you park for SEA LIFE Weymouth? There’s a large pay and display car park directly beside SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium so parking is really convenient for families with younger children.

What is there to see and do at SEA LIFE Weymouth?

One of the things we loved most about SEA LIFE Weymouth is how varied it feels as you move around the attraction. It’s not just rows of fish tanks, there’s a really nice mix of outdoor animal areas, aquarium tunnels, interactive zones and places for the kids to play. The seal area was definitely our favourite part of SEA LIFE Weymouth and we could have watched them for ages. They were so playful and entertaining, especially during feeding times. The talks throughout the day were genuinely excellent too and the staff were brilliant at making them engaging for children.

The penguins were another big hit and so cute to watch, whilst the otters were absolutely adorable during feeding time. There are several feeding and talk sessions throughout the day where you can watch the keepers feed, train and interact with the animals while another member of staff shares interesting facts and information. The male keeper in particular was fabulous and you could really tell he had a genuine bond with the animals, especially the seals, who responded to commands and even came when called by name. All of the staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable – the talks struck the perfect balance of being informative without feeling too educational or over-complicated for younger children.

There are underwater viewing areas where you can spot sharks, rays and tropical fish, plus lots of information boards and interactive learning points throughout the attraction if your children are interested in animals and marine life. One thing that really makes SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium stand out for families is the splash zone and paddling pool area during warmer weather. If you’re visiting in summer, definitely bring towels and spare clothes because younger children especially will absolutely love it. There’s also a playground where kids can burn off some energy during your visit.

There’s a coffee shop on-site, which is handy if you want to stop for drinks or snacks during the day. Because so much of the attraction is outdoors though, I’d definitely recommend trying to visit on a dry day if possible. It would still be enjoyable in light rain, but you’d definitely get the best experience in warmer weather when you can properly enjoy the outdoor setting. (Cold works – just bring coats!)

How big is it and how long do you need?

SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium is a large site with lots to see and do – I’d recommend allowing at least 3 to 4 hours for your visit. This will give you time to properly explore, watch the feeding talks and let the kids enjoy the splash areas or playground too. If you’re visiting during the summer, and the weather is nice, you could easily spend even longer there.

What time does SEA LIFE Weymouth open and close?

Opening times vary depending on the time of year and school holidays, but it’s usually open daily from around 10am. Closing times can vary between roughly 4pm and 5pm depending on the season – you can check the opening times for your visit by clicking here.

Dogs aren’t allowed inside SEA LIFE Weymouth unless they are registered assistance dogs.

How do you book SEA LIFE Weymouth with a Merlin Annual Pass?

If you have a Merlin Annual Pass, you’ll need to pre-book a free timeslot online before visiting SEA LIFE Weymouth. The process is really straightforward and only takes a couple of minutes. You simply log into the Merlin Annual Pass website, select SEA LIFE Weymouth, choose your visit date and arrival timeslot, then show your booking confirmation when you arrive. We actually used our Merlin Annual Passes for our own visit. What is there to do nearby?

SEA LIFE Weymouth Aquarium is in a great location for a family day out because there are lots of attractions nearby. Right next door there’s a crazy golf course which is ideal if you want to continue the fun after your visit. Weymouth beach and the seafront are also close by, so you could easily combine SEA LIFE with arcades, fish and chips or time on the beach during the summer months. Final verdict – is SEA LIFE Weymouth worth a visit?

Yes, definitely – SEA LIFE Weymouth feels much more like a full attraction than an aquarium. This site offers better value for money than some other SEA LIFE Centres because there’s more to see and do – it’s well set up for a proper family day out. The outdoor setting makes such a difference in good weather and the combination of animals, feeding talks, play areas and splash zones means there’s loads to keep children entertained for a whole afternoon.

The feeding talks were honestly one of the highlights of the day and the staff were fantastic throughout the attraction. The whole place just felt really family-friendly and relaxed. It probably wouldn’t be my first choice on a very cold or rainy day, because so much of the experience is outside, but on a sunny spring or summer day SEA Life Weymouth Aquarium is a lovely family attraction and definitely one we’d happily visit again.
