Germany with Kids: The best things to do in Saarburg

If you’re heading to Saarburg in Germany with the kids for a family holiday, and you’re looking for some itinerary ideas, then you’ve come to the right place – here are the best things to see and do! We stayed at Landal Warsberg Campsite – so click through to read my full review for more info – and it was a great base for our adventures. Saarburg is a hidden gem that offers plenty of family-friendly activities, beautiful scenery and historical charm — all without straining your budget.

Where is Saarburg located in Germany?

Saarburg is a lovely little town tucked away in the southwest of Germany, right near the Luxembourg border – and it’s a gorgeous spot for a holiday with the kids. It’s got a slower pace than the big cities, but that’s all part of the charm, and it’s easy to pair with a visit to Trier or Luxembourg City which are both nearby too. In fact, Luxembourg Airport is actually the closest airport to Saarburg – despite it being in Germany – so if there are things that you’d like to do with the kids in Luxembourg it can be a great spot for exploring both places. Take a look at my Luxembourg articles for more information on the best things to see and do there too.

Saarburg is around a 5 hour drive from Calais, so it’s an easy road trip if you’re taking the Dover to Calais ferry from the UK – and it’s a toll-free route through Belgium and Luxembourg. So whether your kids are eager to zip down toboggan runs, explore ancient buildings or marvel at dinosaurs, Saarburg has something for everyone – there are so many fabulous things to do with the kids in this gorgeous part of Germany. For a fun-filled budget-friendly family holiday itinerary, here are the best things to do with kids in Saarburg and the surrounding area:

1. Zoom down the Saarburg Toboggan Run

At the top of hill next to the Landal Warsberg campsite, you’ll find Saarburg’s Summer Toboggan Run, an absolute hit with kids and adults alike. The 530-metre metal track is great fun, and you can wind through the hillside at your own speed. The toboggans are fitted with brakes, so you can go as fast or slow as you like, making it perfect for younger kids. (I have to admit my children were much faster than I was! 😂) It’s just €3 so it’s budget friendly – Finn and Lola had a couple of goes – and a good pocket money activity.

2. Have a treat day at Eifelpark

If you fancy a whole day of fun with the kids, you might want to visit Eifelpark theme park which is a short drive away in Gondorf. This family-friendly amusement and wildlife park offers the perfect combination of nature and fun. The park features thrilling rides, including roller coasters, bumper boats and a giant slide, as well as animal encounters. It’s not an inexpensive day out – but the entry fee covers all the rides, animal shows and playgrounds. Pack a lunch to save on food costs, as there are plenty of picnic areas throughout the park. We didn’t have time to visit Eifel Park during our short trip, but it comes highly recommended on TripAdvisor.

3. Take a ride on Saarburg Chairlift

Next to the toboggan run you’ll find Saarburg Chairlift which offers stunning views of the town below and the meandering Saar River, making it a thrilling yet tranquil start to your adventure. The kids will love gliding above the vineyards while spotting boats on the river. Or, if like us you’re heading down into the valley, you can use it as opportunity to leave the car behind and visit the town centre on foot. The chairlift is an affordable way to get up and down the hillside, we paid €23 for a return family ticket and thought this was pretty reasonable.

4. Enjoy the River Saar

Take a stroll along Saarburg’s scenic riverside paths. There are several short and easy walking routes, ideal for families with younger kids. The peaceful river and surrounding vineyards provide the perfect backdrop for an afternoon walk. Pack a snack or a small picnic to enjoy on a riverside bench – another free and peaceful way to enjoy Saarburg’s natural beauty. From the river there are also canoe tours available, if you’d like a little more action, or if the little one’s don’t fancy paddling there are boat trips available too, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery without too much effort!

5. Explore Saarburg Square

After your chairlift ride, take a short walk to Saarburg’s Market Square for a leisurely afternoon. The town’s centrepiece, this beautiful square is filled with traditional German timbered houses, charming restaurants, beautiful red flowers and the soothing sound of the waterfall that flows right through the middle of town. Enjoy a packed lunch by the Leuk Waterfall, or grab a treat from a nearby bakery – my two always hunt out ice-cream and it was surprisingly cheap at €1.70. The square is a perfect place to relax, people-watch, and enjoy the local vibe – and if you bring a picnic it won’t cost you a penny.

6. Step back in time at Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht

If your little ones are into dinosaurs you might want to have a day out at Dinosaurierpark Teufelsschlucht. Just a short drive away from Saarburg, this family-friendly park offers a unique, educational experience for kids and adults alike. The life-sized dinosaur models nestled among scenic woodland trails are perfect for little explorers, providing plenty of fun photo opportunities. Pack a picnic to save on food costs, as there are plenty of picturesque spots to enjoy a bite while soaking up the surrounding nature.

7. Take a day trip to Germany’s oldest city

Just a 30-minute drive from Saarburg, the historic city of Trier is a must visit – you can’t holiday in Saarburg without taking a day trip to the oldest city in Germany. Start your day at the famous Porta Nigra, an ancient Roman city gate that’s perfect for little explorers. It’s free to admire from the outside, but just €8 for a family ticket if you’d like to go inside – the views over the city are magical. You’ll also want to check out the Hauptmarkt – Trier’s beautiful town square – it’s an incredibly walkable city, so it’s easy with kids and exploring doesn’t cost a thing! Trier Cathedral is another gorgeous building, with free entry, near to the market square. And, the kids might enjoy the Roman Amphitheater too – find out more here: Germany with Kids: What are the best things to do in Trier?

8. Visit Saarbrücken Zoo

For an affordable family day trip from Saarburg, Saarbrücken Zoo is well worth considering. Only a short journey by car, this lovely zoo offers a wide variety of animals, from big cats to exotic birds, perfect for keeping little ones entertained. With reasonable entry prices (kids are only €2!) it’s a great budget-friendly day out option. You can save even more by packing your own snacks, as there are plenty of picnic spots dotted around the zoo. The layout is easy to navigate, with accessible paths for prams, and there’s even a playground to let off some steam. All in all, a fun and frugal day out for animal lovers!

9. Cross the border for a Luxembourg day trip
