Brittany or Normandy, which is better for families?
If you’re torn between Brittany or Normandy for a family holiday, the short answer is that you can’t really go wrong. Normandy is fantastic for short breaks, history lovers and first time trips to France, with famous sights and easy travel from the UK. Brittany, though, often feels like the better choice for families looking for space, beaches and a slower pace. It’s a little more rugged, a little less touristy in places and there’s loads of fabulous days out on offer for the kids. On top of that, there are so many fabulous holiday parks to choose from (as you can see above!) so you’re spoilt for choice when deciding where to stay too!
What are the best things to do in Brittany with kids?
As well as making the most of free days out on the beautiful coastline, and wandering the historical towns and cities, there are lots of fabulous things to do with the kids. You can’t visit Northern Brittany without exploring the infamous Mont Saint Michel. Brittany is also home to some fabulous attractions for the kids – you’ll like want to put places like Parc de Branféré Zoo and Botanical Garden, Kingoland Theme Park, Forêt Adrénaline (treetop course) and Odet Loisirs Amusement Park (with trampolines, zip lines, a maze and all sorts) onto your family holiday itinerary. For those holidaying in Southern Brittany there’s no shortage of activities with water sports, boat rides and segway tours on offer. There’s plenty for kids of all ages to do in Brittany.

When’s the best time to visit Brittany?
The best time to visit Brittany is late spring through to early autumn. May and June are lovely if you want quieter beaches and slightly lower prices, with decent weather for exploring. July and August bring warmer temperatures and a livelier atmosphere, especially in coastal towns, though prices and crowds do rise. September is a bit of a hidden gem – the sea is still warm, the weather can be surprisingly good and everything feels calmer once the school holiday rush has ended.
Travelling to Brittany from the UK
Getting to Brittany from the UK is very straightforward – many families will choose to drive and hop on the ferry, which makes packing easier and gives you flexibility once you arrive. Brittany has several ferry ports, meaning you can often avoid long drives through France. Flying is another option, with regional airports serving different parts of the area, though you may need a car once you land. If you’re travelling with children, taking a road trip is often the easiest and most cost effective way to travel – you can compare route prices through Direct Ferries, or book the Dover to Calais ferry at a discounted rate through Eurocamp (it’s typically around £100 for a return). From there you’ll be looking at a 6-7 hour drive to Brittany. Caen is a closer option, while the ports in St Malo and Roscoff will take you directly to Brittany though they tend to be pricier routes.

So, is Brittany worth a visit with kids?
Absolutely! Brittany is one of those regions that quietly wins you over, especially with children. It has huge sandy beaches, dramatic coastlines, medieval towns you can wander around without queues and loads of free or low cost things to do. The food is also very family friendly – think crepes, galettes, chips and fresh bread from village bakeries. If you like holidays that mix beach days with gentle exploring, Brittany is well worth a visit and it’s the budget-friendly perfect road trip from the UK with just a short travel time once you’ve crossed by ferry.
