If you’re looking for a Christmas day out in Kent that blends sparkle with family fun, SKATE Tunbridge Wells (a pop-up ice rink which appears each December) is a brilliant choice. Every winter, Calverley Grounds in the centre of Royal Tunbridge Wells is transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with twinkling lights, cheerful music and a magical open-air ice rink. It’s the perfect spot to soak up the Christmas spirit and make some lovely family memories. The event has become a firm local favourite, drawing families from across Kent and Sussex. My two love it! So, if you’re thinking about visiting SKATE Tunbridge Wells with the kids this year, here’s my review and guide with everything that you need to know.

Visit: December 2024 (Updated November 2025)

What should I expect – is SKATE Tunbridge Wells Christmas ice rink any good?

SKATE Tunbridge Wells is one of our favourite places to ice-skate in Kent at Christmas – the atmosphere is so magical. The rink itself is set within the historic Calverley Grounds, surrounded by trees and sparkling lights that give it a cosy festive vibe. The ice is well maintained, and the organisers cater for all levels of skater – from complete beginners to those with a bit more confidence. Families can choose from a range of sessions, including parent-and-toddler slots where the rink is quieter and little ones can build confidence using skating aids. Sessions typically last around 45 minutes, and children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. It’s well organised, with friendly marshals on hand to help everyone get sorted with their skates and to offer a helping hand on the ice if needed. With Christmas music coming from the speakers, decorations and festive treats surrounding the ice rink – it’s a great way to get the whole family in a Christmassy mood.

What else is there?

Beyond the rink, there’s plenty more to enjoy. SKATE Tunbridge Wells typically offers a ferris wheel and fairground rides too, as well as Bavarian curling for those who fancy trying something different. Around the rink, you’ll find festive food stalls selling hot chocolate, crepes, burgers and mulled wine, as well as a cosy café and bar area for warming up after your session. If you’re on a small budget bring your own flask of hot chocolate (we always do!) to keep costs at a minimum. There are also relaxed skating sessions with softer lighting and a calmer pace for those who prefer a quieter environment, making it a really inclusive experience for everyone. Even if you’re not skating, it’s a lovely place to stroll around, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a festive treat.

Where is SKATE Tunbridge Wells Christmas ice rink and when does it start?

SKATE Tunbridge Wells runs from Friday 5 December 2025 until Sunday 4 January 2026, open seven days a week (closed on Christmas Day). It’s located in Calverley Grounds, a public park right in the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. If you’re driving, the easiest parking options are at Crescent Road Car Park or Royal Victoria Place, both just a short walk away. For those travelling by train, Tunbridge Wells Station is only a five minute walk from the park making it easy to reach by public transport. Buses also stop nearby on Mount Pleasant Road. Because it’s so central, you can easily make a full day of it – perhaps starting with some Christmas shopping in town or a meal in one of the local cafés before heading to your skating session.

Tickets for SKATE Tunbridge Wells are best booked online in advance, as it’s cheaper and it’ll guarantee your chosen time slot. Prices may vary slightly depending on the day and time, but for 2025 tickets start from around £15 for adults and £10 for children – this covers both your skating time and skate hire. Off-peak sessions are cheaper and likely to be quieter, and there’s also a discount for group bookings so if you’re bringing friends and family book your tickets together to save 10%. Skating aids can be added when booking and are worth reserving early as they often sell out. It’s best to arrive at least 20 minutes before your slot to collect your skates and get ready – there may be a queue! What shall I bring / wear?

SKATE Tunbridge Wells is an outdoor ice-rink so wrap up warm with plenty of layers. To avoid blisters, bring thick socks to keep your feet comfortable in the skates and gloves are a must – especially for little ones. A waterproof coat or jacket is a good idea too as the winter weather can be so unpredictable. If you’re visiting with small children, the parent-and-toddler sessions are perfect for avoiding crowds. Bring a camera or phone for photos – the rink looks magical under the lights, particularly as dusk falls, so you can get some lovely festive shots.
