Where is Vendée in France?

Nestled on the west coast of France, just below Brittany and above La Rochelle, Vendée is part of the Pays de la Loire region. It’s known for its gorgeous coastline, pine forests and plenty of child-friendly campsites – ideal for frugal family holidays. One of the most cost-effective ways to get from the UK to Vendée (especially for families) is to drive – keep scrolling for journey times and routes.

How do I travel from the UK to Vendée?

Ferry and channel crossings

  • Calais: Eurocamp have access to discounted ferry slots to Calais which are usually significantly cheaper than booking directly. The prices fluctuate slightly, but a return on the ferry from Dover to Calais, which takes around 90 minutes, is typically £100 and the Le Shuttle Channel Crossing (30 minutes) is around £250. The drive time from Calais to Vendée is typically around 6.5-7.5 hours.

For the following ferry routes, you’ll want to head to the Direct Ferries website to compare routes and hunt out the best price for your journey. Vendée is easily accessible from these 3 ports in Brittany/Normandy too:

  • St Malo: The ferry from the UK to St Malo takes 6 hours from Poole or around 10 to 11 hours from Portsmouth. Once you arrive in St Malo, most of the Eurocamp resorts in Vendée are around a 3 hour drive away – it’s likely the best route if you’d prefer a longer boat ride and a shorter road trip once you reach France.
  • Caen: The ferry from the UK to Caen usually runs from Portsmouth and takes around 6 hours. Most of the Eurocamp resorts in Vendée are around a 4 hour drive from Caen – so if you’re coming from Portsmouth this route takes less time overall.
  • Roscoff: The ferry crossing from the UK to Roscoff operates from ports like Plymouth, taking around 6-7 hours. Once you reach France, you can expect a drive time of around 4.5-5.5 hours to reach the Eurocamp resorts in Vendée.

Flights

If you’d prefer to fly, the nearest major airport is Nantes, which is around an hour’s drive from much of the Vendée coastline. La Rochelle Airport is another option, particularly if you’re staying in the southern part of the region. When it comes to the budget airlines, I think the best options are Jet2 and EasyJet – use the Skyscanner website to hunt out the cheapest flights. You can sort car hire easily on websites like Expedia, or book your transfers to and from the airport through Suntransfers.
